About the position

The Department of Economics is seeking a committed, curious, and ambitious person to work on the recently awarded Norwegian Research Council project EduGAP . This position is as a three-year Postdoctoral Fellow.

The project aims to provide causal evidence on the impact of assessment forms on student choices and outcomes, both during schooling, into higher education, and throughout the life course. The project position will be supervised by Professor Colin Green (Department of Economics ) and Dr. Jon Marius Vaag Iversen (NTNU Samfunnsforskning & Department of Economics ). We are looking for a candidate who wishes to conduct research in applied microeconometrics with a focus on education and labour economics. This project is a collaboration with the University College London and University of Texas-Austin. In addition to providing a range of opportunities to interact with leading international researchers, there will be opportunities to visit these institutions.

We seek an applicant with a PhD in economics. We particularly encourage applicants with a background in applied microeconomics who have a desire to work on policy relevant research in the economics of education.

The Department of Economics aims to conduct research at a high international level, and you will become part of an ambitious and inclusive academic work environment, consisting of 26 academic staff, 700 students and three administrative staff.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department of Economics.


Duties of the position

Your tasks as a postdoctoral researcher will be to:

  • conduct high quality research connected to the EduGAP project  
  • present research at national and international scientific conferences
  • prepare papers for submission to international journals and disseminate results to non-academic audiences


There may also be teaching opportunities, including conducting lectures, exam work, developing teaching materials, and supervising students. 


Required selection criteria

In order to be qualified for this position you must have:

  • completed a doctoral degree in economics or a closely related field
  • good oral and written skills in English


If you are in the final phase of your doctorate and can document that the thesis has been submitted or that the defense date has been confirmed, your application can be considered even if you have not defended. NOTE: Documentation of the obtained doctorate must be presented before you can take up the position.
If you do not already have educational competence that meets the requirements for a position as associate professor in Norway, NTNU will arrange for you to acquire such competence during the employment period. In such cases, you will also be assigned relevant teaching as part of the career-promoting work.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with NTNUs guidelines for recruitment positions and Regulations concerning the degrees of philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for general criteria for the position.


Desired criteria
  • Experience with using Norwegian or similar register data.
  • Skills and experience in applied microeconometrics.
  • Good oral and written skills in Norwegian.

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 633.400,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The employment period is 3 years.
The position is conditional on external funding.

For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act , and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to bein conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed
