The iC3 Polar Research Hub is an interdisciplinary centre of excellence located in Arctic Norway. Our research covers oceans, ice, cryosphere, carbon, and climate in the Arctic and Antarctica. We are currently looking for potential MSCA postdoc candidates.

Selected candidates will write an MSCA funding proposal to pursue a research project of their own design for 2-3 years at iC3. This opportunity is open to candidates of all nationalities.

Our colleague Pedro Duarte wants to hear from potential candidates interested in joining his team to work with coupled physical-biochemical models of the interactions between glaciers and oceans, with a focus on the European Arctic. Please read this interview for more details on Pedro’s work:

Within this research area, you can pursue the research questions and methodologies that you are most passionate about – this will be your own project to design and run. (Additional MSCA opportunities with iC3 are listed here: https://ic3.uit.no/news/ic3-msca-support )

During the proposal writing process, iC3 will provide you with strong support, including trainings, slides and templates, examples of past successful proposals, and multiple rounds of critical reviews of your draft proposals. 

Over the past three years, building on this strong support, over 42% of MSCA applicants with iC3 have been successful – an outstanding success rate for this highly competitive grant scheme. (In comparison, the average success rate of applicants submitting proposals with other institutions across Europe was less than 15%.)

If you secure funding, you will join a large and friendly team of researchers passionate about doing cutting-edge interdisciplinary polar science. Working with iC3, you will join a vibrant community of 25+ PhD and postdoc researchers, most of them housed on the same floor in the same building. You will also gain access to our outstanding research infrastructure, mentorship and training programme, and regular social events. We believe that the best science is collaborative, and each postdoc will be fully integrated into one of our research groups. 

We are located in Tromsø, the capital of Arctic Norway, surrounded by the sea and mountains. Tromsø is the hub of a large polar research community, including iC3’s host university (global #1 in Arctic-related research), our partners the Norwegian Polar Institute and NORCE, and numerous other research and policy organisations focused on the Arctic and Antarctica.

Please note that this is not a job vacancy. You will need to write a winning proposal and secure MSCA funding yourself to join iC3. This will require considerable time and effort.

The deadline for MSCA proposals is only in September 2026 but writing a winning proposal takes considerable time and effort, so we recommend that you start the conversation with your potential supervisor as soon as possible. Candidates entering iC3’s support programme before the end of March 2026 will additionally benefit from our host university’s Arctic MSCA support programme.

This call is open to candidates of all nationalities living in all countries worldwide. To be eligible, as of September 2026 candidates must hold a PhD degree and have a maximum of 8 years full-time equivalent experience in academic research. Please note that the MSCA grant will require you to move to Norway when you start your project. MSCA pays a family allowance for grantees who relocate with their partners and/or children.
