Post/s of Full-Time Research Support Officer I or II 

Project FDM2M – “Taking SmartFDM to Market” 

Funded by Xjenza Malta under the Go2Market 2025 Programme

And any other projects undertaken by the Institute of Aerospace Technologies.

 

Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer (RSO) to carry out duties in relation to the FDM2M project, which is funded by Xjenza Malta. The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Institute of Aerospace Technologies.

 

Applicants should be in possession of an ICT, Engineering or Aerospace degree. Previous work experience with flight data and simulation software such as XPlane or others would be given preference.

 

Applicants should be knowledgeable of coding languages such as Matlab and Python.

The initial remuneration per annum (inclusive of any cost-of-living adjustment) shall be €27,207 (RSO I) or €30,327 (RSO II).

Further Information

The project aims to get the SmartFDM technology closer to Market by enhancing interactive features of the smartFDM Software, developing the use of flight data as a means for developing evidence based training for pilots - thus enabling us to complement our data analysis with training and developing. Thius post specifically aims to develop a playback module, thus allowing raw flight data from an identified scenario to be played back on a flight simulation software such as XPlane. The playback option will need to be integrated with an in-house built software. 

To achieve its objectives, the project retains the successful collaboration between the Institute of Aerospace Technologies and QuAero Ltd. as the industrial partner. The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Institute of Aerospace Technologies. Informal enquiries on the Project are encouraged. The appointee will be responsible for carrying out research with the main duties including: 

  • Assistance in the management of the project and working closely with the project partner and the funding body throughout the duration of the project;
  • Producing project deliverables within the time frames specified in the project description;
  • Preparation of scientific publications related to the project;
  • Travelling to attend meetings/conferences as the need arises;
  • Execution of dissemination and public engagement activities related to the project;
  • Keeping detailed progress reports and abide to all the conditions imposed by the project;
  • Attending project internal meetings and meetings with research collaborators; and
  • Performing any other project-related tasks as instructed by the Principal Investigator. 

 

The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

 

The selection procedure will involve:

  • Scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  • Shortlisting; and
  • An interview and / or extended interview.

 

The post is for a period up to 24 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
