Project AN – “Anorexia Nervosa in Males in Malta”

Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer (RSO) to carry out duties in relation to the Anorexia Nervosa in Males in Malta project, which is funded by Dar Kenn Ghal Sahhtek. The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Psychology, Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

 

Applicants must be in possession of a first degree in psychology or a related area.

The post is for a period of up to 12 months split in 3 phases as follows:

Phase 1 - 20 hours per week for 16 weeks;

Phase 2 - 20 hours per week for 16 weeks;

Phase 3 - 6 hours per week for 16 weeks.

 

The initial remuneration per hour, inclusive of any cost-of-living adjustments, shall be €13.08.

Further Information

 

The project is concerned with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) in Maltese males, and is split into three phases as follows:

 

Phase One shall consist of investigating male-specific symptoms of AN in Malta. This part of the project will seek to research how Anorexia Nervosa manifests in Maltese males, identify symptoms that may be overlooked due to gender biases, and examine socio-cultural factors contributing to the under diagnosis.

 

Phase Two is concerned with the development and validation of a culturally and gender-sensitive screening tool for Anorexia Nervosa in Maltese males.  During this phase, the project shall seek to address gaps in existing diagnostic measures by adapting current tools to reflect male-specific symptomatology and ensuring their accuracy within the Maltese context. 

 

Phase Three will deal with the dissemination of research findings on male-specific Anorexia Nervosa in Malta and the promotion of a newly developed screening tool among healthcare professionals and the wider public.  At this last stage, the project shall seek to improve awareness, reduce stigma and support early detection of Anorexia Nervosa in Maltese males.

The appointee will be responsible for carrying out research with the main duties including: 

  • Research activities, including analysis and reporting;
  • Assistance in the management of the project and working closely with the funding body throughout the duration of the project;
  • Producing project deliverables within the time frames specified in the project description;
  • Preparation of scientific publications related to the project;
  • Travelling to attend meetings/conferences as the need arises;
  • Execution of dissemination activities related to the project; and
  • Performing any other project-related tasks as instructed by the principal investigator.
  • The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

 

The selection procedure will involve:

  • scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  • shortlisting; and
  • an interview and / or extended interview.

 

The post is initially for a period of up to 12 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
