Further Information

The Research Cluster’s area of research is based within the field of the Environmental Humanities and aims to examine how environmental issues are framed, narrated and communicated in various contexts. Drawing on data from diverse linguistic and cultural sources, it will interrogate the politics and ethics of dominant narratives and foster critical reflection on alternative climate futures.

The cluster consists of three main pillars, dealing with different discursive perspectives on the overall theme, connecting the areas of cultural studies, literary studies as well as linguistics to other related areas of research within and beyond the Faculty of Arts: 1) Discourses of Environmental Politics; 2) Changing (Is)Lands and Seas: Narratives of the Environment in Transformation; 3) Environmental Futures in Multilingual Perspectives and Foreign Language Teaching.

Research areas include Islands and Insularity, Critical Discourse Analysis, Blue Humanities and Mediterranean Studies, and will be explored in interdisciplinary collaborative projects between the language departments in the Faculty of Arts as well as other Departments, Faculties, Institutes and Centres at the University of Malta, such as the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology, the Centre for Environmental Education and Research, the Islands and Small States Institute, the Institute of Earth Systems or the Departments of Public Policy and the Department of Tourism Management (both in the Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy).
