Rīga Stradiņš University invites applications for a Scientific Assistant position at the Institute of Microbiology and Virology to join the research group of a tenured professor in data science.
About The Group
Our interdisciplinary research group focuses on developing and applying advanced image processing and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to solve challenges in healthcare and biotechnology. Our work spans from AI-assisted drug discovery to the analysis of biological and medical images for diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Scientific Assistant to contribute to a project at the intersection of biotechnology, drug development, and computational analysis.
Candidate will be involved in:
- Collaborating with computer scientists and engineers to develop AI-based models for biological and medical image analysis.
- Processing, interpreting, and presenting experimental data (using tools such as SPSS, and Python Pandas).
- Contributing to scientific publications and reports.
- Preparing biological samples and acquiring microscopic or other bio-analytical image data.
- Designing and conducting laboratory experiments in biotechnology, potentially involving cell culture, biomaterial characterization, or assay development.

Skills/Qualifications
- A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with standard laboratory techniques and instrumentation (Spectroscopic analysis).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in English (both written and spoken).
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications (Assets)
- Familiarity with image analysis software (e.g., ImageJ, MATLAB) and/or an interest in learning computational data analysis methods.
- Experience with quality control procedures in a pharmaceutical or biotech R&D setting.
- A proven record of scientific creativity, such as patents, publications, or conference presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate on projects involving AI or computational tools.
