Offer Description

Climate change and increasing hydrological variability are posing significant risks to the reliability and cost-effectiveness of hydropower-based energy systems in Africa, at a time of rapidly growing electricity demand and large-scale infrastructure investments.
This research programme aims to assess the impacts of drought extremes on the African hydropower system by integrating climate-driven hydrological projections and stress-testing approaches within continent-scale energy system optimisation models. The proposed methodologies will enable a systematic evaluation of system performance, investment trade-offs, and resilience under extreme but plausible drought conditions, providing quantitative evidence to support climate-resilient and economically viable long-term energy planning across Africa, including relevant local case studies as part of the BERLIN project.
