Offer Description

The researcher will join the 2D spintronics team in charge of developing terahertz emitters and field-effect transistors based on two-dimensional (2D) materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides. He will work within the Spintec laboratory on the 'Cluster 2D' growth platform to fabricate and then transfer large-area layers of 2D materials, on the upstream technology platform (PTA) for the micro- and nano-fabrication of devices, and on the team's optical and magnetotransport benches to study electronic properties. He will work under the supervision of Matthieu Jamet, head of the 2D spintronics team, as part of the PEPR SPIN TOAST and PEPR Microelectronics ADICT projects, which aim to integrate 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures into spintronics (terahertz emitters) and microelectronics (field-effect transistors).

The researcher will contribute in particular to the following areas:
• the growth, by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), of 2D material layers and their van der Waals heterostructures,
• characterisation of the fabricated materials using atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS),
• the transfer of 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures using wet or dry methods onto target substrates such as SiO₂/Si, ferroelectric materials or microelectronic chips,
• the characterisation of materials after transfer,
• micro- and nano-fabrication of devices (THz emitter and transistor) in a cleanroom, • optical and electrical measurements on the optimised devices,
• analysis and interpretation of the data obtained,
• publication of one or more individual and/or joint articles on the analysis of data collected during the project,
• participation in national or international conferences,

The researcher will be based at the Spintec laboratory (Building 10.05 at the CEA Grenoble site), which has world-renowned expertise in spintronics and, more specifically, in 2D materials. Most of the equipment required for the successful completion of the project is available within the laboratory. However, the researcher will collaborate with other laboratories such as the CEA LETI for the integration of 2D materials onto chips (transfer, nanofabrication and electrical measurements), the CEA Grenoble nano-characterisation platform (PFNC) for certain characterisation techniques (Raman spectroscopy, XPS, kPEEM), as well as with project partner laboratories such as the ENS Physics Laboratory in Paris or the Albert Fert Laboratory in Palaiseau for THz emission measurements.

Additional Information
Eligibility criteria

Candidates must hold a PhD in condensed matter physics and have a proven track record in research, demonstrated by at least one publication as first, co-first or second author in a field relevant to the project's theme and activities. Other essential criteria for this position include a good knowledge of 2D materials, ideally with experience in the growth and/or characterisation of materials and/or in spintronics. Finally, a good mastery of spoken and written English is required. The ability to work as part of a team is also essential for this position.
