Offer Description

Interested in high-impact applied research? Motivated by research dedicated to a major environmental and geopolitical issue? Ready to tackle a breakthrough solution for rare earth processing? REMMIA is a European project coordinated by Prof. Bernard Doudin of the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Materials in Strasbourg (IPCMS). REMMIA aims to recycle rare earth metals and compounds (recycling end-of-life magnets) using an innovative technique for separating, extracting and filtering metals. REMMIA offers a much more environmentally friendly and efficient alternative for purifying and recovering key materials for the green transition. The consortium consists of five partners, including two start-ups, spread across three different countries. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting preliminary research to better characterise and understand the properties of electrochemical reactions carried out under strong, controlled magnetic fields. Part of the work will involve establishing an in-situ characterisation method, supplemented by research into optimal experimental conditions that maximise magnetic force fields, ideally by isolating one of the types of force. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with the start-up Remedy, which has the application expertise for these concepts as applied to the separation of rare earths, and will be able to test the discoveries on systems intended for practical use. It is important to emphasise the applied nature of this research, which has a strong societal impact ambition and requires particular care to protect intellectual property, while maintaining a collaborative research approach within a network involving other academic and industrial partners.

- Construction of electrochemical cells incorporating specially designed magnetic field sources, including quantitative measurement of local magnetic fields.
- Implementation of tools for in-situ characterisation of species in solution and precipitation indicators
- Electrochemical studies to better understand the effect of magnetic fields on precipitation processes
- Research into new solvents and solvent combinations to improve the selective precipitation of elements based on their magnetic properties
- Collaborative activity as part of an international partnership (possible stays abroad or hosting of consortium colleagues)

The work will be carried out at the Strasbourg Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Materials (IPCMS), UMR 7504 CNRS – University of Strasbourg, which is an internationally renowned research and training centre in the field of materials and nanosciences. The staff are affiliated with the CNRS (INP, INC) and Unistra (Physics & Engineering, Chemistry, ECPM, Télécom Physique Strasbourg departments). The laboratory is organised into three physics departments and two chemistry departments, which interact closely with each other. The successful candidate will join Prof. Doudin's group, which consists of around ten researchers. He/she will work closely with a CIFRE doctoral student from Remedy, within a collaborative European network comprising two other laboratories and another startup. The successful candidate will enjoy the benefits of being based at the CNRS site (catering, access to public transport).
