Offer Description

The project aims to study the main phases of human settlement in New Guinea. New Guinea represents one of the oldest human settlements outside of Africa and is home to some of the greatest linguistic and genetic diversity on the planet. Archaeological and genetic evidence suggests that the ancestors of the New Guineans reached Sahul (present-day New Guinea and Australia) at least 55,000 years ago. However, little is known about this early phase of settlement, particularly the routes taken.

Main tasks:
- Conduct demographic modeling analyses based on human genomic data.
- Write a manuscript based on the results of the analyses performed.

Secondary tasks:
- Facilitate scientific discussions within the team.
- Organize monthly videoconferences with international collaborators.

The Centre for Research on Biodiversity and the Environment (UMR5300; https://crbe.cnrs.fr/en/ ) is internationally recognized for its research on the interaction between the environment and biodiversity using genetics. Numerous projects are being developed across various animal phyla, including humans, particularly in tropical environments. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a stimulating multidisciplinary environment with researchers from diverse fields. The candidate will collaborate extensively with our international partners in Australia, Switzerland, and Papua New Guinea. The CNRS and UMR5300 are committed to equal employment opportunities.
