Offer Description

The Archaeology and Archaeometry Joint Research Unit (ArAr, CNRS, INSH, UMR 5138, University of Lyon 2, University of Lyon) brings together prehistorians and protohistorians, archaeologists specialising in the Gallo-Roman and medieval periods, geologists, sedimentologists and petrographers, physicists and chemists specialising in materials analysis and carbon-14 dating.
The doctoral student will be assigned to the MOMau site at the ArAr archaeology and archaeometry laboratory - 7 rue Raulin 69007 Lyon.

Thesis topic
Diachronic study of construction practices in the Shirak region of Armenia: from stone supply to use in ancient and medieval buildings, from the 7th century BC to the 7th century AD.
Within the framework of the ANR FACE project, leb by Anne Baud, the research will focus on a series of sites:
- protohistoric and ancient fortified sites (Beniamin, Horom, Shirakavan, etc.)
- early Christian buildings in southern Shirak (Pemzachen, Lmbat, Artik, etc.)
- identified or yet to be located quarries within a wider radius.
It will focus on several questions:
- Technical continuities and discontinuities: is there continuity in expertise between the pre-Hellenistic, ancient and early Christian periods?
- Organisation of supply: did the materials come from local or regional quarries? Can we identify supply chains?
- Territorialisation and control of resources: did the exploitation of quarries contribute to the structuring of the territory (local, aristocratic and ecclesiastical powers)?
Required skills
- Knowledge of geology and quarry archaeology (or basic concepts)
- Building archaeology
- Experience in excavation and prospecting
- Proficiency in photogrammetry, manual surveying and block surveying
- Proficiency in English
