The Marie Skłodowska Curie Doctoral Network “DyeAnotherWay” is inviting applications for a 36 months full time fixed term position as a Doctoral Researcher (DR). This research project is a collaboration between 17 organisations, including 9 academic and 8 non-academic, from 11 countries (AT, BE, BR, DE, ES, FI, FR, PT, SE, UK, USA) across Europe and beyond. The research aims to investigate all aspects of biogenic dyes, from the identification of dye-producing bacteria and the characterization of their pigments, through the optimization of their production and application, to the comprehensive ecological and economic evaluation of the resulting solutions. 

The successful applicant will be employed by the University of Helsinki in Finland, with planned intersectoral and interdisciplinary stays with collaboration partners totalling a maximum of 11 months.

The research and the PhD thesis will be on gaining knowledge of consumers’ attitudes and expectations towards biobased and bioengineered dyes and creating strategies which will help a successful launch of the new developed dyes and products. The research plan will be designed in collaboration with the supervisors prof. Riikka Räisänen and prof. Minna Autio.

The DC will: 

  • conduct research among consumers using quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • collect data by a questionnaire using Likert scale, to indicate the strength of the opinion/attitude
  • collect qualitative data with interviews
  • analyse data to obtain information of consumers perspectives, opinions, attitudes and expectations
  • develop communication strategies for different consumer profiles for launch of novel biodyes and products
  • carry out research in collaboration with the companies involved in the doctoral network DyeAnotherWay
  • work as a part of an international multidisciplinary team in the University of Helsinki and DyeAnotherWay project
  • publish research articles in respected scientific journals
  • finish doctoral thesis and gain doctoral degree
  • Position contains teaching maximum 5% of the yearly working hours. 

Beyond the specific expertise gained during the DR’s completion of their research work, this position offers an opportunity to gain international research experience, as well as an array of skills relevant to project management, research management and career development.

Skills/Qualifications

Successful candidates must:

  • hold a University Master’s Degree in a suitable discipline that makes them eligible for a PhD in Craft Science. Craft Science studies broadly materials and making processes as well as consumption and sustainability issues related to materials and products.
  • not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, study, etc.) in Finland for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to 01.01.2026, unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention, but may be of any nationality
  • be available to start between 01.07.2026 and  01.08.2026
  • have excellent English language skills
  • have high motivation on both quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • be able to travel internationally on a regular basis, for example to attend regular project meetings or to take part in conferences
  • be able to work in an international environment, be highly motivated and reliable, be able to work to strict deadlines

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in craft science/craft research, consumer studies, social studies, sustainability education or education.
