Offer Description

The Department of Energy Technology at TalTech invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor. The purpose of the position is to lead teaching, research, and development activities in the field of smart district heating and cooling (DHC) systems with a focus on systemic integration (district cooling–district heating–electricity–waste heat), energy storage, and digital planning. In addition, the Assistant Professor is responsible for the development of the solar heating research laboratory.

Main tasks:

  • participation in the research work of the Smart District Heating Systems and Integrated Assessment Analysis of Greenhouse Gases Emissions research group, contributing to research and development projects;
  • publication and presentation of research results;
  • planning and management of research and development activities, selection of research topics and coordination of projects;
  • applying for competitive project funding;
  • development of cooperation with research institutions, companies, and municipalities in Estonia and internationally; leading pilot projects and knowledge transfer;
  • organization of the development of teaching and R&D infrastructure and digital competence required for the field;
  • teaching at all levels of higher education and participating in curriculum development activities;
  • supervision of students (BSc, MSc, PhD) and development of the next generation;
  • participation in national and international professional decision-making bodies and committees;
  • cooperation with scientific journal editorial boards and peer review of research articles;
  • promotion of the field.

The offered Assistant Professor position is in the Smart District Heating Systems and Integrated Assessment Analysis of Greenhouse Gases Emissions research group, led by Prof. Anna Volkova. The research activities are focused on developing innovative technical solutions for the accelerated transition into sustainable district heating and cooling (DHC) systems. Another core competence is the integrated assessment analysis of greenhouse gases emissions.

The Assistant Professor position is fixed-term, up to eight years from the start date. The workload is 1.0, and the position will be filled from 01.09.2026.

Specific Requirements

The qualification of the Assistant Professor must meet the requirements of the Regulation on Academic Career Management of Tallinn University of Technology, including:

  • education level: PhD in energy technology (or related field);
  • previous work experience: previously worked in an academic position in the field of energy technology (or related field). At least 2 year of postdoctoral work experience;
  • published at least 5 (five) high-level scientific articles (ETIS level 1.1. or equivalent) in the last 5 (five) years;
  • experience in conducting research and development related to smart district heating and cooling (DHC) systems, experience in participating in relevant research and development projects;
  • experience in participating in research and development projects related to district cooling;
  • the total volume of projects received with his /her participation is over 10 thousand euros.

* If the candidate has taken parental leave, maternity or paternity leave, or served in military or substitute service after obtaining the doctoral degree, the time limit for becoming an assistant professor is extended by the duration of such leave or service.

Preference is given to candidates who:

  • are familiar with the use of solar energy and know how to develop research laboratories;
  • have successfully supervised bachelor's and master's theses;
  • can work both as a team member and independently;
  • have an excellent command of academic writing;
  • participate in projects as principal investigator.
