Job Description
The Section for Chemical Engineering, Department of Green Technology (IGT) at the University of Southern Denmark is seeking a laboratory technician for a full-time position, with the possibility of part-time work upon agreement. The position will involve work in the section primarily within biochemistry, microbiology, and bioengineering, but also natural product chemistry and inorganic chemistry. The work will support research and education of engineers in chemical engineering and biotechnology at the bachelor and master level, as well as general laboratory work in the department’s laboratories including daily operations and research.
The position is available from 15 Maj 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Overall ResponsibilitiesThe following are examples of tasks:
- Assists with the daily operation of the laboratory.
- Handling and cultivation of microbiological cultures.
- Handling, processing and sample preparation of biological samples.
- Preparation of media, reagents and buffers.
- Operate laboratory equipment such as incubators, bioreactor, spectrophotometers, protein analysis and chromatography equipment, microscopes, centrifuges, autoclaves, etc.
- Work on research projects (e.g. extraction, quantification, purification and analysis of various molecules of biologic origin; perform biochemical/protein and microbiological assays; screening of biological molecules).
- Assist teachers during laboratory exercises and guide students in laboratory procedures.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
- Other ad hoc tasks
The applicant is expected to have a laboratory technician education or similar and preferably some years of experience from the industry, healthcare, or education sector. You must be able to speak and write English, and we expect you to have good organizational skills and be ready to perform ad hoc tasks.

While only few candidates will fulfill all the points below, we prefer that you have experience with and can see yourself performing as many of them as possible.
- Basic biochemical, biotechnological, and microbiological techniques.
- General biological and chemical sample preparation.
- Techniques used within protein and DNA work.
- Sterile techniques and handling of microbial cultures (e.g. in bioreactors).
- Cultivation and characterization of different microorganisms.
- Use different types of laboratory equipment.
- Understanding of GMO safety regulations and hygiene practices.
- Good organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a technical team.
- Work structured and systematic and able to pass on knowledge.
- Effective oral and written communication skills (English).
- Basic computer skills and experience with data handling.

Workplace descriptionThe Section for Chemical Engineering is part of Department of Green Technology (IGT) at the Faculty of Engineering, SDU. It is a highly interdisciplinary department equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories.
You will be part of a team of technicians and special consultants working in the department supporting research and teaching.
Odense, where IGT is located, is an international and family-friendly city with a rich cultural life, situated by the fjord. It is about an hour from Copenhagen and has a direct train connection to Copenhagen’s international airport. SDU’s Odense Campus is nestled in the beautiful Danish countryside, surrounded by fields and forests, with remarkable wildlife right at its doorstep.
