Detailed Job Description
In order to ensure your application is received by NAIT for thorough review and consideration, please apply directly through our Careers site at www.nait.ca/careers
Please Note: This is a casual opportunity commencing on May 5, 2026, and ending on August 31, 2026.
We are recruiting students to join our research team as Forestry Field Assistants/Interns. This position will be based within the Plant and Seed Research program at the Centre for Boreal Research in Peace River, AB, with supervision by Dr. Ruth Errington. At the core of this position is a large, replicated, experiment set up in northern Alberta to test the effectiveness of various “bend and break” treatments to release planted spruce from aspen competition in approximately 5-year-old cut blocks. Team members will conduct bend and break treatments using hand saws and spend a large part of the summer season collecting measurements to characterize these experimental stands and document the tree and shrub responses to the treatments. Positions may also support routine lab and desk-based activities (including data entry and organization and imagery compilation) and may involve opportunities to contribute to other research projects at the centre.
Position Requirements:
These are field-based positions (working outdoors approximately 80% of the time and in an office environment approximately 20%).
Preference will be given to individuals who:
- Have the ability and ambition to work outdoors in all types of terrain and weather conditions.
- Have the ability or willingness to use hand saws to conduct bend and break treatments in regenerating forest stands.
- Have experience driving 4WD trucks on gravel roads.
- Have vegetation identification training (and experience).
- Are willing and able to work in remote field locations.
- Are physically fit, well organized, and can work comfortably in a team environment.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled (or recently graduated) in a diploma or BSc program in Forestry or Biology; college students will be given preference with respect to funding in some of these positions.
- Class 5 license with a clean driver's abstract.
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).
Remuneration:
- $17.48 - $21.69 per hour, plus 12% in lieu of stat holidays and vacation accrual. (Classification – Student Research Assistant I).
- Successful candidates will be eligible for a monthly living allowance of $650.00.
This casual opportunity is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
Please submit a resume and cover letter to be considered for this opportunity.
