Research Associate position in the Stem Cell Bioprocessing Laboratory (main supervisor Hoesli, Department of Chemical Engineering of McGill University) and the Human Islet Transplantation Laboratory (main supervisor Steven Paraskevas, RI-MUHC).

Project: "Emulsion-generated alginate beads as platform to systematically investigate immune responses to encapsulated islets for diabetes cellular therapy".
Position Summary:
Conduct experiments both in vitro and in vivo to assess the interactions between encapsulated insulin-producing cells and immune systems involved in graft rejection in the context of type 1 diabetes cellular therapy. The research associate will study the extent at which biomolecules of different size can pass through the encapsulation material. They will study inflammatory responses to the insulin-producing cells with or without encapsulation, as well as to the encapsulation materials alone. These experiments will be conduced using human blood cell subsets, as well as by transplanting the insulin-producing cells and or encapsulation devices into rodents.
 

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree
  • Over 10 years of experience in experimental immunology.
  • At least 1 year of experience with encapsulation technologies.
  • Experience characterizing extracellular vesicles and their cargo in terms of inflammatory molecules and signals.
  • Experience characterizing cellular populations involved in fibrosis, including image analysis as metric of fibrosis extent in histological sections.
  • Experience writing grants and supervising graduate students.
