100%, Zurich, fixed-term
Applications are invited for a PhD position in the Air Quality and Particle Technology group (Prof. Dr. J. Wang). The successful candidate will matriculate in ETH Zürich.
Project background
Position starting from May 2025 or upon agreement.
Job description
The research focuses on probing biomolecular interactions with plasmonic sensing. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are strong photon-induced collective hot-electron coupling effects, which can create intense and sensitive electromagnetic near-field associated with noble metal nanostructures. SPR and LSPR have been demonstrated as powerful tools to study nanoscale bimolecular interactions and sensitive biosensing. Our group has been engaged in plasmonic biosensing as for real-time and label-free biomolecular interaction analysis, such as airborne virus detection, local aggregation of proteins and nucleic acids, etc.
Additionally, our group performs research on various aspects of sensing systems based on advanced optics, microfluidics and electrochemical methods, which provides a wide range of opportunities for the PhD candidate.
The student will be involved in tasks such as:
- Investigating interaction of proteins and nucleic acids
- Developing advanced plasmonic materials
- Developing various configurations of plasmonic sensing methods
Profile
We are looking for suitable candidates with a master level degree in biochemistry, biotechnology, material science or related fields with excellent grades. Good experimental capability is of high value. Good command of English is required.
