Description of the workplace
The PhD position is placed at the Cardiovascular Research – cellular metabolism and inflammation with labs at the Clinical Research Centre (CRC), a dynamic and inspiring research environment on the Skåne University Hospital Malmö Campus. Work duties
A disturbed balance between injury to the vascular wall and repair of this injury is a key factor in the development of atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. Previous studies have shown that oxidized LDL is an important cause of injury and inflammation in the vascular wall. It has also been shown that a reduced ability to produce growth factors for endothelial cells are associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction. The research group has in collaboration with external partners developed two drug candidates for treatment of these conditions. One is an antibody against oxidized LDL and the other is a peptide with biological properties similar to those naturally occurring endothelial growth factors. This PhD project focuses on elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms through these drug candidates have their action.

The work duties will include, among other things, to keep up to date with the state-of-the-art in the research field, work with flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, image analysis, gene expression analysis, ELISA, cell culture, data analysis, statistical data analysis in experimental studies and large clinical patient materials. The PhD student will also work with international partners and is expected to participate in international meetings and conferences. The PhD student may also participate in some teaching at the bachelor’s and master’s level.

Qualifications

Basic eligibility for doctoral education is someone who has:

• completed a degree at advanced level
• completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level or in some other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

The requirements for special eligibility are met by someone who has:

• at least 60 credits in the subject area of ​​medical science
• applicants must have knowledge equivalent to at least 3 years of upper secondary education in English.

Special requirements for the employment are:

• good ability to express oneself orally and in writing in English.
• good experience of working with cell and molecular biology techniques.
• ability to collaborate and work independently, as well as being focused, organized and able to plan.
• personal qualities that are consistent with a clear scientific curiosity, commitment and motivation. 

Meritorious for the position are:

• Experience of working with cardiovascular research

About the employment
The position is a fixed-term position for a total of four years, 100% with a start date of 2025-06-01 or as agreed. The main rule is that employment at Lund University is conducted in Sweden, so you are expected to be able to perform your work on site in Malmö.
