Offer Description

Grant/funding reference: ED431G‐2023/09

Job title: Grants for the accreditation, structure, improvement and support to Research Centers of the Galician University System. Co‐financed in the framework of the operational programme Feder Galicia 2021‐2027 (Specific objective 1.1: Enhancing research and innovation capabilities while integrating advanced technologies of the Regional Ministry of Culture, Education, Vocational Training and Universities (Xunta de Galicia).

Research line / Scientific‐technical services: Feeding circuits and mechanisms of cancer.

“CICA  ‐ Interdisciplinary Centre of Chemistry and Biology” of the UDC was accredited in 2024 as a Research Centre of the Galician University System (SUG), joining the CIGUS Network of the Xunta de Galicia as a research centre of excellence.

CICA currently has 30 affiliated research groups and focuses on three strategic thematic areas: Biomedicine (BMed); Food, Pollution and Health (ACeS); and Nanoscience and Advanced Materials (NeMA).

The accreditation and membership of the Research Center to the Galician CIGUS Network will require specific support and monitoring tasks, as well as future positioning, in which CICA will seek to continue its scientific excellence and uniqueness within the Galician research space.

The increasing competitiveness and continual evolution in the field of research demand a strong commitment to developing and attracting new talent. In this context, CICA recognizes the necessity of strengthening and diversifying its research capabilities by establishing new research groups in three strategic areas. These groups will not only enhance our current projects but also pave the way for new research paths essential for advancing knowledge within our institution.

The announcement of these three pre‐doctoral contracts—one for each of CICA's strategic areas—presents a valuable opportunity to attract talented individuals with innovative skills and knowledge. By providing the chance to work under the guidance of newly recruited and accomplished research staff (Ramón y Cajal, Beatriz Galindo), these positions will enable young pre‐doctoral researchers not only to advance their research projects but also to develop the essential skills needed to become leading professionals in their respective fields.

Moreover, this initiative is part of a broader CICA strategy aimed at fostering excellence and competitiveness in research. Through this effort, we aim not only to strengthen the center's research capacity but also to contribute to the training of the next generation of scientists and academics.

In summary, this call for pre‐doctoral contracts represents a crucial step toward consolidating our research areas and cultivating an environment that promotes innovation, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas. We are confident that these initiatives will attract top talent and enhance the quality of research conducted at the center, ensuring its long‐term relevance and sustainability.

This recruitment is funded through the “Grants for Accreditation, Structuring, Improvement, and Sustainability of Research Centres within the Galician University System, co‐financed under the framework of the Feder Galicia Operational Programme 2021‐2027”.

Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will join the FeMCa group (“Hunger Circuits and Cancer Mechanisms”) of the CICA, with the principal investigator Dr. Mª Elena Rodríguez García‐Rendueles, where he/she will carry out the necessary experiments for the evolution of the project.

Tasks are focused mainly on molecular and cellular biology techniques and experiments aimed at biomedicine related to the doctoral program in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Specifically:

 Use of cellular and molecular biology techniques.

o Maintenance and management of primary cultures and cell lines. Preparation of culture media, maintenance of cell stock in liquid nitrogen.

o Carrying out cell growth and viability assays, as well as cell migration and invasion assays. Which will involve the use of different inhibitors and drugs.

o Extraction of DNA, RNA and proteins.

o Use of cloning, mutagenesis, transfection/infection and bacterial transformation techniques. Genetic silencing techniques (siRNA, shRNA, CRISPR...) or overexpression.

o Staining of samples by IHC and immunofluorescence. Use of the microscope.

o Use of molecular techniques such as PCR, RT‐PCR, Real‐time PCR, electrophoresis or western blot.

o In vivo experimentation: carrying out primary mouse cultures; genografts.
