Project title

Influence of hydro- and chemo-mechanics on fluid pathways

Overview & Research Questions

The Earth’s mantle is the main source of critical metals that in their way up react with the host rocks forming ores. Mantle derived fluids are also used as a geothermal energy source as in Iceland or as a touristic asset as in the Japanese hot springs. Mantle derived fluids originate from magmas that after fractional crystallization the most incompatible elements remain dissolved in a fluid that flows through the crust until it reacts and crystallizes or simply springs out.

Although extensive research has examined the formation and chemical behavior of these fluids, there has been less exploration of the broader mechanisms governing their flow. Our project aims to address this gap by studying how the distribution of the Earth's lithosphere, plate movements, and mantle dynamics control the generation and motion of these fluids. Specifically, we will address the following research questions: (1) How do tectonic settings such as subduction, delamination, collision, and extension control the pathways of mantle fluids? (2) What roles do mantle plumes and instabilities play in driving fluid flow in the absence of plate movement? (3) Can we simulate these processes to better understand their dynamics and predict their impacts in real-world tectonic settings?

To answer these questions, the project test three distinct tectonic scenarios from the simple configurations to progressively advancing to complex simulations that replicate real-world tectonic scenarios, such as craton edges (Figure 1; Negredo et al., 2022), Gibraltar subduction, Variscan collision, and Rhein rifting.

Skills/Qualifications

The following criteria apply to all the DC positions within ForMovFluid:

  • Early-Stage Researchers Rule: All researchers recruited in a doctoral network must be Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs, i.e., be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree).
  • Nationality Rule:  Researchers can be of any nationality.
  • Mobility Rule: at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not considered. The mobility rule applies to the (first) beneficiary where the researcher is recruited, and not to beneficiaries to which the researcher is sent or seconded. It is also only determined at one point in time: that of the fellow's first recruitment in the project.
  • English Language: ESRs must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.
  • Host Specific Criteria: Every ESR must qualify for admittance as a PhD student at the university the position is assigned to. Consequently, there may be additional criteria for every position that are laid out in the detailed description of every ESR position.
  • Number of Applications: Candidates can apply for up to 5 projects.

All the information about the position and details on how to apply can be consulted at the project's website: https://formovfluid.eu/

Specific Requirements

We are looking for a student with a master’s degree in physics or natural sciences, knowledge in geosciences, and a solid foundation in computational geodynamics. The project will involve the development and execution of numerical simulations using geodynamic codes such as ASPECT. We expect candidates with good communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills.

You will join an active group of researchers at the Institute for Geosciences (IGEO-CSIC) and become part of the ForMovFluid group, where you can enhance your technical and soft skills while broadening your horizons with new disciplines and tools. Madrid is a vibrant metropolis, located near Spain’s major natural and cultural attractions, and hosts one of the best-connected airports globally.

The CSIC provides a welcoming, dynamic, and interdisciplinary research environment at the forefront of scientific innovation in Spain. If you are motivated, a team player, and eager to learn, we encourage you to apply!

Benefits

Doctoral Candidates (DCs) will be provided with the following living allowance, subject to local taxation and government contribution requirements:

Spain Living Allowance        €44,450 p.a. gross

*subject to local taxation and government contribution requirements

Should you have a family at the time of your recruitment, you are entitled to an additional "family allowance" of EUR 500 per month. For the purposes of the MSCA, family is defined as "persons linked to the researcher by marriage (or a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognised by the legislation of the country where this relationship was formalised) or dependent children who are actually being maintained by the researcher". Note that your family status is determined at the time of your recruitment and remains fixed during the lifetime of the project.

Selection process

To apply to this position, please do it through ForMovFluid’s website: formovfluid.eu . You can apply through the dedicated form you will see in each position. You can apply for up to 5 projects (select them in the same form, ordered by your priority of choice), and please attach the following documents in the form:

  • A two-page CV
  • A one-page motivation letter for each of the DCs positions you want to apply.
  • The e-mail for a reference contact (not a reference letter, just the contact). We might contact your reference person during the decision process.
