NOTICE FOR THE AWARD OF RESEARCH GRANTS
Reference: BI_06_DEM_TEMA_2025_SPOTLOG
A tender is hereby opened for the award of one Research Grant (RG) under the project SPOTLOG Green and Socially resPOnsible ciTy Logistics InnovaTions, (P01C0055) for the TEMA - Center for Mechanical Technology and Automation, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Aveiro under the following conditions:
1. Scientific Area: Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering
2. Funding Source: Interreg Europe Programme, with co-financing from the European Union (ERDF)
3. Admission requirements: Students enrolled in a master's degree in Smart Mobility. Previous research work (academic papers, conference papers) in the area of transport, logistics, or impacts related to the transport sector is considered a preference factor.
The proof of enrolment must be made available until the contract is awarded, and the candidate may attach a declaration of honor to confirm that they meet the requirements for enrolment in an integrated master's degree, master's or doctoral program or in a course that does not confer an academic degree.
If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th, which approves the legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education, attributed by foreign higher education institutions, and of paragraph e) of no. 2 of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 60/2018, of August 3rd, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring act.
4. Eligibility: Applicants are eligible if they comply with paragraph a) of no.1 of article 2, of the Research Fellow Statute in the wording given by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th, and also the provisions of article 9 of the Scientific Research Grant Regulations of the University of Aveiro.
5. Work plan: The work to be developed focuses on supporting the activities of the SPOTLOG project. The central objective of the SPOTLOG project is to address multiple practical and policy aspects related to the optimization of the final path of logistics distribution networks and a comprehensive assessment of urban logistics impacts on society. Specific tasks include:
- Support the organization of experience exchange events and mobilize stakeholders.
- Participate in Interreg Europe experience exchange events and other scientific knowledge dissemination events.
- Conduct a review of good practices, academic and industry literature on last-mile transportation and logistics applications, including passengers and freight.
- Identify data sources relevant to the context of the SPOTLOG project and externally (e.g. transport data, demographic data, logistics operator and transport-on-demand data).
- Develop a clear evaluation methodology, including key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the potential of on-demand transport (e.g. cost-effectiveness, accessibility, environmental impact, scalability).
- Conduct interviews or surveys with relevant stakeholders (e.g. logistics operators, local authorities, citizens) to gather information on the potential of integrated transport of people and goods in on-demand transport systems.
- Collaborate on the development of sustainability indicators and policy guidelines.)
6. Applicable legislation and regulations: Research Fellow Statute, as amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28th; Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, Regulation No. 292/2020, published in Diário da República No. 61, Series II, of March 26th; Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions).
7. Workplace: The work will be developed at TEMA – Center for Mechanical Technology and Automation of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Aveiro, under the scientific guidance of Dr. Jorge Bandeira and Dr. Joaquim Macedo.
8. Duration of the fellowship: The grant will last for 8 months, starting in April 2025 possibly renewable for additional periods of 3 months, up to the maximum limit of the approved funding, and may not in any case exceed the limits defined in paragraphs 5 and 6 of article 9 of Regulation no. 292/2020, of 28 February, published in Diário da República, no. 61, 2nd Series, of 26 March (Regulation of Scientific Research Grants of the University of Aveiro).
9. Value of the monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to €990,98, according to the table of values of monthly maintenance allowances, set out in Appendix III of the Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, subject to any updates that may occur and are applicable. The fellow may also be reimbursed for the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Security, in case of adherence to this plan.
10. Selection methods: The selection methods to be used will be the following: Curricular evaluation with the respective evaluation of:
- Arithmetic average of the degree classification (30%);
- Number and Quality of academic papers, publications or communications at national or international conferences (10%)
- Quality of the motivation letter (maximum 2 A4 pages), preferably in English, explaining personal motivation, the adequacy of the academic curriculum and the work carried out (30%)
- Alignment of the preliminary dissertation project with the scope of the tasks proposed in this fellowship (30%).).
11. Composition of the Selection Jury: The jury responsible for the selection will consist of the President: Dr. Jorge Filipe Marto Bandeira, Assistant Researcher; Members: Professor Joaquim Miguel Gonçalves Macedo, Eloísa Catarina Monteiro de Figueiredo Amaral e Macedo Equivalent to Assistant Researcher Assistant Professor, Alternate Members: Professor Margarida Isabel Cabrita Marques Coelho, Full Professor, Professor António Manuel de Bastos Pereira, Full Professor.
12. Application deadline and form of submission of applications: The call is open from March 10 to 21, 2025, and applications are only admitted within the established deadline.
Applications must be formalized by sending an application letter accompanied by the following documents: Curriculum Vitae, dated and signed; simple copy of the qualification certificate, declaration of honour, motivation letter (1 page max.) and other supporting documents considered relevant for the selection methods presented in point 10.
Applications should be sent by email to the address of the scholarship area of the Secretariat of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Aveiro (dem.bolsas@ua.pt ) until the end of the deadline, indicating in the subject the reference "BI_06_DEM_TEMA_2025_SPOTLOG”.
13. Form of publication/notification of results: The results of the evaluation are disclosed within a maximum period of 60 working days from the deadline for submission of applications, by notifying the candidates. Candidates are informed, at a prior hearing, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure, of the probable direction of the final decision, and may, within 10 working days from this notification, comment on this decision. An appeal may be lodged with the Rector against the final results, to be submitted within 10 working days from the respective notification.
14. Validity of the competition: The final ranking list of candidates will be valid until October 31, 2025, for the purpose of constituting a selection reserve list.
The models of the scholarship contract and the final report to be prepared by the scholarship holder and the supervisor can be consulted at scholarship holders - sgrh - University of Aveiro (ua.pt ).
