NOTICE OF for 1 (one) PhD Research studentship, for the project “Break the loop: Driving meaningful interactions with inconvenient game design strategies” (ref. 2023.14448.PEX), AT THE FACULTY OF FINE ARTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO


The Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP) hereby opens this call for applications for a 1 (ONE) PhD research studentship to carry out R&D activities within the scope of the project “Break the loop: Driving meaningful interactions with inconvenient game design strategies” (Ref. 2023.14448.PEX),financed by FCT, at the Research Institute in Art, Design, and Society  (i2ADS) at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, under the following conditions:

 

1. Research area/s: Design, Game Design, Interaction Design.

 

2. Admission requirements:

To apply for the PhD research studentship, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:

  • PhD in Design or related fields - completed less than 3 years ago[1] .
  • Do not exceed, with the conclusion of the scholarship contract in question, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of three years in this type of scholarship, consecutive or interspersed.
  • Availability to start the scholarship from March 2025 (to be mentioned in the motivation letter).
  •  

    3. Preferred requirements:

  • Research experience in the areas of interaction design, game design or similar.
  • Proven experience in web design and web development.

     

  • 4. Work Plan: 

    4.1. The purpose of this contract is to perform the following tasks:

  • Systematic literature review in databases and books.
  • Non-systematic review of grey literature.
  • Identification of relevant case studies in the literature.
  • Identifying case studies by organizing speculative workshops and research with professionals, students and users.
  • Analysis of literature and case studies and preparation of a summary of results in the form of two tools: 1) framework of theories and methods; 2) online database of case studies and the mechanics present in them.

    5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations: 

    The call for applications and the respective award of the studentship are governed by the provisions of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation - approved by Regulation no. 184/2021, published in Diário da República, 2.ª Série, n. 43, 03rd March, hereinafter referred to as the Regulation no. 43, of 03rd March; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of 7th January; the Research Fellow Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18th August, in the current wording published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28th August and; other applicable rules.

     

    6. Workplace

    The work plan will be developed at the Research Institute in Art, Design, and Society at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto and/or other locations necessary for implementation under the scientific supervision of Professor José Miguel Santos Araújo Carvalhais Fonseca.

     

    7. Duration

    The studentship will have a duration of 6 months, possibly renewable, after a positive evaluation, up to the limit of the period of execution of the work plan or funding, and may not, under any circumstances, exceed, with the conclusion of the scholarship contract in question, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of three years in this condition, consecutive or interpolated, under the terms of Article 11(2)(e) of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation.

     

    8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount

    8.1. The monthly maintenance allowance for the studentship is 1.801,00 €, in accordance with Annex I of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation.

    8.2. Payment will be made by the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the studentship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.

    8.3. The studentship holder can join the Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme (valid for a studentship contract of six months or more), which is optional (not compulsory) and the reimbursement corresponds to the 1st step of the contribution base.

     

    9. Evaluation methods

    9.1. The admitted candidates will be subject to the methods of Curriculum Evaluation (CE) and Cover Letter (CL) and, if the jury deems it necessary, an Interview (I) with the 3 highest-ranked candidates from the previous evaluation.

    9.2. Curriculum Evaluation (CE)
    The CE score will be obtained according to the factors identified below, which must be duly substantiated by the candidates, with a maximum total of 20 points. If any of the conditions are not properly substantiated, they will be scored with 0 points.

    9.2. Cover Letter (CL)
    The cover letter must specify the motivation for the position (Mot.) and mention the availability (Avail.) to start the job.

     

    9.3. Interview (I)

    This evaluation phase is optional and will only take place if the jury believes that the Curriculum Evaluation (CE) and the Cover Letter (CL) did not sufficiently clarify the candidates' actual competencies or distinguish which candidate is most suited for the position and specific duties.
    The Interview (I) aims to assess personal aspects and clarify doubts related to the candidate’s background and is applicable only to the three highest-ranked candidates.
    Each interview evaluation factor will be scored on a 5-point scale (Poor - 0 points; Sufficient - 2 points; Good - 3 points; Very Good - 4 points; Excellent - 5 points) based on the following criteria, totalling a maximum of 20 points:

  • Attitude (evaluates the candidate's behavior in terms of analysis, planning, and organization).
  • Motivation for the role.
  • Specific knowledge in interaction design, game design, or related fields.
  • Specific knowledge in web design and web development.
  • Communication skills.
  • The final interview score will be the sum of the points obtained.

    9.4. Final Result

    If no interview is conducted, the final score will be equal to the sum of the Curriculum Evaluation and Cover Letter scores, according to the following weighting formula:


    0.8 x CE + 0.2 x CL

    If an interview is conducted, the final score will be calculated using the following formula:

    0.3 x CE + 0.2 x CL +0.5 x I

    If none of the candidates demonstrate the appropriate profile to carry out the work plan, the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship.

     

    10. Selection panel: 

    Chair – José Miguel Santos Araújo Carvalhais Fonseca, Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto and researcher at i2ADS .

    1st effective member – Eliana Isabel Saraiva Pereira dos Penedos Santiago, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto and researcher at i2ADS .

    2nd effective member – Pedro Jorge Couto Cardoso, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto and researcher at i2ADS .

    Substitute member – Fabrício Mário Maia Fava, Researcher at i2ADS.

    Substitute member – Bruno Sérgio Gonçalves Giesteira, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto and researcher at i2ADS.

     

    11. Submission of applications

    11.1. The candidates must be submitted by 21 of February, 2023 (local time - Lisbon).

    11.2. The candidates must be formalized using the online application submission system available on the website: https://sigarra.up.pt/fbaup/pt/CNT_CAND_GERAL.CONCURSOS_LIST (Ref. 2025/5, no. 39).

    11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving the conditions set out in this Notice, namely: 

  • Curriculum Vitae in Portuguese or English, duly updated, with express indication of full name and email.
  • Cover Letter, indicating availability to start work in March 2025, to demonstrate compliance with the minimum admission requirements indicated in item c).
  • Copy of the required Qualification Certificate(s) and the respective recognition of academic qualification (if obtained from a Foreign Higher Education Institution – to be proven at the time of hiring), to prove compliance with the minimum requirements for admission indicated in the subsection. a), from point 2.
  • Statement of eligibility (attached);
  • Portfolio of web design and web development projects.
  • 11.4. The candidates may also attach any other documents they feel are relevant to assessing their merit.

    11.5. Failure to comply with the application submission deadline, failure to submit or late submission of the documents referred to in points a) to e) of paragraph 11.3. will result in the application being excluded. 

    11.6. The documents must be attached directly to the application message, without links to external platforms/disks. In order to ensure that all documents can be read, the preferred saving format is "Portable Document Format" (.pdf). The files must be labelled with the name and surname of the applicant and must not exceed 5 MB in total. These files can be compressed into .zip format. 

    11.7. The Jury may, whenever it deems it necessary, ask applicants to submit additional documents relating to the facts mentioned in the curriculum vitae submitted, setting a deadline for this, in the following terms:

  • the documentation referred to is not intended for the presentation of elements not mentioned in the curriculum vitae, nor for the addition of missing documents required by this Notice.
  • all applicants are informed that additional documentation has been requested.

    12. False declarations:

    False statements made by candidates will be penalized in accordance with the law.

     

    13. Notification of results:

    13.1. Applicants will be notified of the minutes relating to the application assessment phase(s) sent to them by email, to the address they provide for this purpose, with a receipt of delivery.

    13.2. Notifications are made by email, under the terms of articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the CPA.

    13.3. Under the terms of article 121 et seq. of the CPA, once notified, candidates have 10 working days to comment in writing.

     

    14. Booking list:

    A booking list will be drawn up on the basis of the final ranking list, which may be used in the event of the first-placed candidate withdrawing. The Faculty's highest authority reserves the right to call the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of publication of this Notice.
