The Institute of Mechanical Engineering – IDMEC is opening a call for

 Scientific Initiation Studentships

 

Applications are open for one (1), Scientific Initiation Studenship, within the framework of project “Novel unified multiscale predictive tool for gaseous microfluidic flows in Knudsen Pumps”, ref. 2023.13693.PEX, financed by national funds (OE) through FCT.IP, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related scientific fields.

Admission Requirements:

Scientific Initiation Studentships

  • Be enrolled at a professional higher technical course, at a bachelor degree, at an integrated master or master degree, or to have a bachelor degree and be enrolled at a course that does not award an academic degree and it is integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, performed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units; or declaration of honor in which undertakes to be enrolled until the grant's contract is done.
  • not to exceed with this contract, including the possible renovations, an accumulated period of one year in this type of studentship, continuously or with interruptions; 
  • not to have held any other fellowship directly  or indirectly funded by FCT.

    • Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries shall be registered by a Portuguese institution, according to the Decree-Law nr. 66/2018, of August, 16th, and the Ordinance nr. 33/2019, of January, 25th.     Workplan and the objectives to achieve: 

    This work aims to study the viability of a promising physical model called the moments method, obtained through the Boltzmann equation, for microfluidifc gaseous flows. The work plan provides for the following tasks:

    1 - Review how the equations of classical Fluid Mechanics - Navier-Stokes equations - are formulated and what their limitations are, mainly in the context of microflows study.

    2 - Understand the formulation of the Boltzmann equation, and the advantages of its use in the field of microfluidics.

    3 – Derive the equations described by Grad's method of moments and its regularized version, comparing the two cases, with particular focus given to linearized formulations.

    4 – Extend the study to the derivation of wall boundary conditions in each method. 

    5 – Apply the two methods of moments (Grad and its regularized version) to practical examples of gaseous flows in microchannels, where analytical solutions are available, and evaluate the abilities/limitations of both methods.

    Workplace: The work will be developed at IDMEC - Institute of Mechanical Engineering, being both the Host and Contracting Entity, and under the scientific supervision of of Prof. Gonçalo Nuno Silva.

    Duration: The research fellowship will have the duration of six (6) months. It’s expected to begin in April 2025, without possibility for renovation.

    Monthly maintenance allowance: According to the values for Research Fellowships awarded by FCT in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/fct-atualizou-o-valor-das bolsas-para-2025/), the amount of the monthly maintenance allowance is € 651,12, being the payment method by Wire Transfer.

    Selection methods: The selection methods will be the following: Curriculum evaluation, with the respective weight of 100%.

    Composition of the selection Jury: : Jury President Prof. Gonçalo Nuno Silva, Prof. Nuno Serra and Prof. Joaquim Marques.

    Announcement/ notification of the results: The final evaluation results will be communicated to all applicants by email.

    After be notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit a formal rebuttal, by email.

    Application deadline and formalization: The call is open in the period between February 20 and March 06, until 18:00, 2025.

    It is mandatory to formalize applications with the submission of the following documents: Curriculum Vitae; academic degree certificate, where applicable; proof of enrollment at an academic degree course or at a course that does not award an academic degree; motivation letter; declaration on honour that the applicant does not exceed with this contract, including the possible renovations, an accumulated period of one year in this type of studentship, continuously or with interruptions, and has not held any other fellowship directly or indirectly funded by FCT.
