Offer Description
Within the MSCA Doctoral Network ForMovFluid (formovfluid.eu ), we have several PhD positions open at the moment. A complete description of this offer, together with all the elegibility criteria and employment conditions can be found at https://formovfluid.eu/positions/project-2/ .
Additional information about the project, and other PhD positions available can be consulted at ForMovFluid's website: formovfluid.eu
Project title
A hyperspectral approach to the characterisation of fluid flow and associated alteration and mineralisation in Upper Palaeozoic sedimentary sequences from south west Ireland
Overview & Research Questions
Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), although traditionally used as a remote sensing technique, has increasingly been used to analyse geological cores for mineral prospecting, discriminating lithology, and refining stratigraphy (e.g., Booysen et al., 2022; Géring et al., 2023; Lorenz et al., 2022) (Figure 1). This project will investigate the regional scale rock alteration in the Upper Devonian Munster Basin and Lower Carboniferous South Munster Basins, southern Ireland by combining remotely sensed hyperspectral data, core/outcrop imagery and in situ Raman Spectroscopy analysis.
Two test sites have been selected (1) the Allihies quartz vein hosted Cu deposit on the Beara Peninsula, County Cork and the Zn-Pb prospect hosted in Lower Carboniferous limestones from the Rathkeale area of north County Limerick. The main target is carbonate-hosted Irish Type Zn-Pb mineralization within the Waulsortian Limestone. The research will incorporate hyperspectral data acquired from outcrops, drill cores and UAVs into a single 3-D model that, with the aid of machine learning protocols, can be upscaled to facilitate regional mineral exploration strategies in these areas.

Skills/Qualifications
The following criteria apply to all the DC positions within ForMovFluid:
- Early-Stage Researchers Rule: All researchers recruited in a doctoral network must be Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs, i.e., be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree).
- Nationality Rule: Researchers can be of any nationality.
- Mobility Rule: at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not considered. The mobility rule applies to the (first) beneficiary where the researcher is recruited, and not to beneficiaries to which the researcher is sent or seconded. It is also only determined at one point in time: that of the fellow's first recruitment in the project.
- English Language: ESRs must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.
- Host Specific Criteria: Every ESR must qualify for admittance as a PhD student at the university the position is assigned to. Consequently, there may be additional criteria for every position that are laid out in the detailed description of every ESR position.
- Number of Applications: Candidates can apply for up to 5 projects.
All the information about the position and details on how to apply can be consulted at the project's website: https://formovfluid.eu/
Specific Requirements
There are some specific Eligibility Criteria for this position:
- A First-class or 2H1 honours degree (or equivalent) in Remote Sensing. Candidates from other disciplines such as Geoscience or Computer Science may also be considered if it can be shown it is relevant to the research topic.
- A good understanding and strong interest in the application of remote sensing to geoscience research.
- A strong understanding of data analysis and statistics.
- Capability of working independently or within a project team to achieve results.
- Good communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills.
- Applicants whose first language is not English must show evidence of English proficiency (e.g. IELTS minimum 6.5, individual sections 6.0), please check the requirements at: https://www.ucc.ie/en/study/comparison/english/postgraduate/
