Postdoc Position in Surface/Materials/Macromolecular Chemistry

Updated: 16 days ago
Deadline: 2025-04-15T00:00:00Z

Our group is relocating to the University of Düsseldorf (HHU) and focuses on the synthesis of functional organic polymers using modern methods of macromolecular synthesis (reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations, ring-opening polymerizations) and efficient organic chemistry ligation methods in order to design functional/reactive nanostructured materials for biological, medical, or biotechnological applications. We currently shift our research endeavors towards a more sustainable polymer chemistry (sourcing, stability, degradability, recyclability). We also work with engineers and physicists in the development of new smart devices for communication, sensing, and electronics.

The postdoctoral project will encompass various aspects ranging from the synthesis and modification of small organic molecules, synthetic polymers, and biomolecules to the surface modification of 2D (nano)materials with the aforementioned (macro)molecules, as well as materials characterization. This project is highly collaborative and will be carried out in the frame of a joint effort with partners at the Faculty of Electrical, Information and Media Engineering at the University of Wuppertal (Prof. Pfeiffer).

The University of Düsseldorf (Heinrich Heine University) is a dynamic research institution with around 34 000 students and 4 000 academic staff, offering cutting-edge facilities and a strong international network. Located in Düsseldorf, a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with over 650 000 residents, it combines world-class research opportunities with an outstanding quality of life—featuring a thriving cultural scene, a renowned international airport, one of Germany’s highest rankings for livability (#33 worldwide) and for expats (#2 in Germany). With its blend of innovation, career prospects, and a welcoming atmosphere, Düsseldorf is the perfect place for young scientists to work and thrive.

The ideal candidate looks forward to working in a highly collaborative and multicultural team and holds a PhD degree focused on one or several of the following topics: organic and/or macromolecular synthesis (not engineering), surface chemistry, biosensor design. She/he should have experience with several of the following analytical methods: NMR, UV-Vis, IR, and RAMAN spectroscopies, size-exclusion chromatography, mass spectrometry, XPS, SEM, TEM, AFM. Strong social and communication skills, and an excellent level of English are essential, as well as a clear intention to take on the role of scientific mentor for undergraduate and graduate students.
