We are UKM. We have a clear social mission and, with our focus on healthcare, research, and teaching, we bear a unique responsibility.

To meet our high standards every day, we are looking forward to your scientific expertise in the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of the University Childrens Hospital Münster and the Institute of Neuropatholog. Here, we are offering a PhD student position as part of an exciting joint project between the Thomas and Kerl research groups – ideally with you on board!

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Thomas lab focuses on integrating cutting-edge OMICS technologies with spatial resolution to uncover molecular mechanisms within the morphologic context of tissues. The Kerl group investigates cellular heterogeneity and communication in pediatric tumors. Together, we aim to explore the mechanisms driving cellular transformation in pediatric ependymomas, particularly how benign subependymomas transition to aggressive ependymomas.

Ependymomas represent a clinically and biologically diverse group of brain tumors, with aggressive subtypes often demonstrating resistance to treatment. By leveraging advanced technologies such as single-nuclei RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and multiplex immunohistochemistry, this project seeks to identify genetic, epigenetic, and transcriptional mechanisms underlying these transformations. Ultimately, our goal is to uncover diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers that may inform future therapeutic strategies.

REQUIREMENTS:

We are seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented individual with a strong interest in tumor biology and molecular pathology. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biology or a related field Practical experience in molecular biology techniques (e.g., RNA/DNA extraction, sequencing) Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and data analysis for single-cell RNA sequencing and epigenetics (or willingness to learn) Strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently within a team A commitment to scientific rigor and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research

WE OFFER:

  • A collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment involving two leading research groups Access to advanced methodologies, including cutting-edge single-cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics platforms A unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research with clinical and translational implications

For inquiries, please contact: Prof. Dr. Christian Thomas, T 0251 83 50422 or Prof. Dr. Kornelius Kerl, T 0251 83 47783
