Offer Description

The ERC Consolidator project "UMCMC" led by Pierre Jacob develops Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, where Markov chains are generated to approximate a probability distribution of interest. The project builds upon a framework called Unbiased Markov chain Monte Carlo (UMCMC), based on couplings of Markov chains, and motivated by the parallel nature of modern computing architectures. This project develops UMCMC to realize its potential as a comprehensive basis for probabilistic computation on modern hardware. This requires theoretical and methodological advances.
Broadly the project relates to Statistics, Probability, Monte Carlo, numerical methods, Stochastic Processes, Markov Chains, Couplings, Optimal Transport, Robust Statistics, Differential Geometry and Reinforcement Learning.

The successful applicant will be part of a team led by the principal investigator. There will also be postdoctoral researchers and other PhD students. The applicant will participate in all aspects of the scientific activities related to the project, including the writing of articles to be submitted to the top journals in the field of statistics, interaction with international collaborators, the possibility of extended visits abroad, participation in conferences, etc.
This position will be based in Cergy (France), near Paris. The successful applicant will join a dynamic environment of researchers and teachers in statistics at ESSEC Business School, with regular research seminars and teaching opportunities. The applicant will benefit from the vibrant research environment of the wider Paris region, with many universities and schools.
