Important update: As part of a larger harmonization of Tri-Agency graduate and postdoctoral funding programs , the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships program will be folded into the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral (CGRS D) program effective for the fall 2025 competition. A significant change is that eligibility has been expanded to include international students who are enrolled in a doctoral program of study at an eligible Canadian institution at the time of application.

This page will be updated with further details as they become available in summer 2025. The information below is from the previous competition, provided here for reference.

Eligibility

Complete eligibility criteria are available on the CGS-D program page  (the NSERC PGS D shares eligibility criteria with the CGS D).

However, this additional eligibility criteria is specific to the NSERC PGSD:

  • Applicants may take up their PGS D at any eligible Canadian institution. They may also take it up at any eligible foreign institution, provided they have received a previous degree from a Canadian institution.
  • If an applicant is offered a CGS D but decides to take the award to an eligible foreign institution, and is eligible to do so, they must decline the CGS D to be offered a PGS D award in its place.

Refer to the NSERC PGSD program page for details.
