Offer Description

Your function

As a PhD student, you conduct research in the field of biostatistics, epidemiology or data science, under the supervision of a supervisor (and possibly co-supervisor), with the goal of obtaining a PhD degree. You conduct scientific research, write and publish research articles, contribute to national and international conferences and build an (inter)national network.
You are part of the Centre for Statistics, a dynamic research team within the Data Science Institute, with extensive national and international contacts. The research topic of the PhD is aligned with one of the ongoing research lines within the research group. The exact focus of the research will always be chosen in consultation with your supervisor, based on your profile and interests. The research can vary from fundamental to more application-oriented. Examples of possible research topics include covariate adjustment of multivariate outcomes in clinical trials, causal machine learning, exponential random graph models for modeling mpox, demography and infectious disease epidemiology.
You will continuously have the opportunity to further professionalize and specialize. Additionally, you will participate in the ‘Doctoral School of Sciences & Technology’ and be part of the teaching team in the Department of Mathematics-Statistics. You will contribute to educational tasks to a limited extent (for example: supervising work sessions, preparing and improving exams, guiding students with their master's thesis).

Your team

The Data Science Institute (est. 2019) brings together over 150 researchers working in the broad field of data science across faculties and research groups at Hasselt University. DSI's main objective is to facilitate the data-driven future. We are committed to data-related challenges, fundamental innovations and applicable solutions.
