TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching, and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto "Technology for People". As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.
The University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FHOÖ) is one of the largest and the most research-intense University of Applied Sciences in Austria. It has more than 5,800 active students and employs more than 440 researchers in about 500 ongoing national and international research projects. FHOÖ highly prioritizes interdisciplinary research and aims to combine different research fields related to technology, economics, and social sciences.
We announce five open PhD positions within the framework of the doctoral programme "Future Wireless THz Communication Devices and Systems - FutureTHz", which is funded by the FWF-Austrian Science Fund, to be filled starting September 2025 for the duration of expected four (4) years. The positions are equivalent to a part-time university assistant (30 hours).
The doctoral programme FutureTHz is an interdisciplinary cooperation project between TU Wien (3 positions) and University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in Hagenberg (2 positions). FutureTHz is focused on investigation of one of the most-promising THz technologies – resonant-tunnelling-diode (RTD) oscillators. We aim to solve several key problems in this field and to make RTD oscillators and their arrays fit for practical THz applications. Each PhD student will be supervised by at least two professors from the relevant disciplines and institutions.
PhD topics:
1. Semi-analytical modelling and fabrication technology of RTD oscillators
2. Experimental investigation and fabrication technology of RTD oscillators
3. Communication/ranging with RTD oscillators
4. Numerical simulation techniques for the analysis of arrays of RTD oscillators
5. Equation learning methods for nonlinear models for RTD oscillators
Further details on the doctoral programme and the individual PhD topics can be found here .
The aim of the doctoral programme is to train outstanding young researchers who will make a major contribution to the development of THz technology, including micro- and nano-fabrication, advanced measurement, modelling and simulation techniques, as well as THz applications.
Tasks:
- Research in the field of THz electronics
- Deepen scientific knowledge and conduct independent research work on the specific projects
- Successful completion of important milestones and of the Future THz Doctoral Programme curriculum
- Presentation of research results at international conferences and other scientific events
- Writing publications and a PhD thesis
- Participation in scientific events and other outreach activities
- Participation in organizational and administrative tasks of the doctoral programme
