About this scholarship

Forrest Research Foundation PhD Scholarships are open to candidates from all countries and all disciplines and are intended to accelerate opportunities for outstanding researchers.

Forrest Scholars break with convention, push at boundaries and go further than they imagined possible. They work with their PhD supervisors and research group to be at the forefront of world-leading research in their chosen discipline. Their research has the potential to change the world. 

There are up to six prestigious Scholarships in 2025 for outstanding researchers from around the world to conduct paradigm-shifting research based at any of Western Australia’s five universities, including Curtin University.

The 2025 Curtin University enrolled Scholarship opportunity includes:

-          Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend scholarship or equivalent university research scholarship valued $37,500 per annum and indexed annually

-          Accommodation allowance of $24,128 per annum in 2024 to live at Forrest Hall, on the banks of the Swan River.

-          A one-off research and travel allowance of up to $12,000, plus a relocation allowance allowing for economy airfare to Perth for eligible Forrest Scholar and immediate dependants.

Forrest Scholarships are open to students of any discipline.


(1) Forrest Research Foundation PhD Curtin enrolled Scholarship applicants must:

a) have applied for admission in a PhD and commence enrolment in 2025 as an internal student based at a Curtin’s Western Australian Bentley campus;
b) not have been enrolled in the proposed PhD or previously undertaken research towards a PhD or other research doctorate;
c) have a bachelor’s degree of First Class Honours standard or equivalent;
d) be intending to reside at Forrest Hall. (Exemptions to this residency requirement may be considered by the Governors of the Forrest Research Foundation); and
e) be eligible to enrol full-time at Curtin university by the date of commencement of the scholarship.
(2) To be eligible to take up a Forrest Research Foundation Scholarship an awardee must –

a) have been offered and accepted the following scholarships:
i. Domestic awardees: Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend and tuition fee offset scholarship or university equivalent PhD stipend scholarship awarded by Curtin University
ii. International awardees: Research Training Program (RTP) stipend and tuition fee Offset Scholarship or equivalent awarded by Curtin university.
b) be enrolled full-time in the PhD by the commencement date of the scholarship;
c) be residing in Forrest Hall from the commencement of the scholarship, unless an exemption from this residency requirement has been granted by the Governors of the Foundation ; and,
d) agree to reporting their academic progress to the Forrest Research Foundation Director each year.


Application process

Applications close on 31 October 2024.

Applications must be submitted via the Forrest Research Foundation application portal. and include a completed application form, CV, copies of all academic transcripts and contact details for three referees (at least two academic).

Applicants must also submit an application for the Doctor of Philosophy at Curtin university they are hoping to complete their PhD with Curtin.

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet the university’s requirements for satisfactory progress throughout their PhD and remain enrolled on a full-time basis for the duration of the scholarship.
