Position Description
The Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science at Georgetown College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics, beginning in August 2025. The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in Mathematics by the start date of the position. This position is renewable for up to three years; should a tenure-track line open within that time frame, the successful candidate would be eligible to apply for it.

The Department offers B.A. degrees in mathematics and engineering mathematics and minors in computer science, mathematics, physics and data analysis. In addition, the Department hosts a pre-Engineering transfer program and participates in a consortium through which students can obtain majors in web design and information technology. Emphasis is placed on teaching excellence in the context of a church-related college; research and professional development are encouraged and supported. The teaching load is the equivalent of four three-hour courses per semester.

The successful candidate would join a team of two physicists and four mathematicians who value active learning in the classroom and the systematic development, both in class and in extracurricular activities, of communication and collaboration skills in addition to the critical thinking and problem-solving skills typically associated with the study of mathematics. We value—and have always enjoyed—strong collegiality both within the Department and across campus.

Students in our Department often participate in either our institution’s Science Honors Program, which funds a summer of undergraduate research, or in its Oxford Honors Program, under which our mathematics majors can spend one or two terms at Oxford University.

Scholarly interests among the current mathematicians include operator algebras, abstract algebra, mathematics education, undergraduate statistics education, mathematical modeling, data science and the history of mathematics. We welcome candidates from any mathematical specialty, but in particular we are seeking someone who could ultimately share in the teaching of a limited number of courses in elementary computer programming and data science, and to be able to guide students in computational work in advanced courses and in senior Honors projects.

The College does not discriminate, either in the admission of students, the hiring and promotion of employees, or in the administration of any of its educational policies, programs, or activities on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age or disability. We embrace diversity and inclusion, and warmly encourage women and individuals from under-represented groups to apply.

Georgetown College is a historically Baptist institution and committed to remaining a broadly Christian institution in the 21st century. The college does not require faculty to be part of any particular denomination or to commit to any particular creedal or faith statement, but just as the college is rooted in Christian love and service, we expect our faculty to actively live out those values as well. The College may use religion as a factor in making faculty employment decisions and in Board of Trustees appointments.

Interested persons should submit a cover letter, vita, copies of transcripts, statement of teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. Jonathan Sands Wise, at provost@georgetowncollege.edu. Applications are accepted until the position is filled, but review will begin on December 2, 2024.

We are not accepting applications for this job through MathJobs.Org right now. Please see the job description above on how to apply.
