Position Responsibilities


Position Summary
This position aids in developing and implementing the Recycling and Solid Waste (RSW) programs to minimize waste production and manage costs.
Duties may include:
· Assist with Composting operations and maintenance using in vessel Intermodal Earth Flow Compost System
· Assist with maintaining cardboard and single stream recycling pickup routes.
· Maintain records of overall types and weights of materials leaving the university
· Assist with managing and oversight of the solid waste program
· Work with the Environmental Health & Safety Office (EHS) to determine, reduce and divert hazardous waste
· Operate and monitor a variety of warehouse and inventory equipment, including a skid steer, front end loader, and flatbed truck.
· Attend meetings and training sessions to keep current on program changes, surplus and solid waste technologies, and regulations
· Other duties as assigned

Responsibilities


Job Duty Function Assist the universities recycling, and solid waste programs by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities
· Loading food waste and bulking agents into an Earth Flow in vessel composter.
· Collecting food waste in bins from Dining Services.
· Unloading composting from the Earth Flow composter with a front-end loader.
· Moving materials such as wood chip and composting to the appropriate piles.
· Performing and recording moisture and temperature readings of composting.
· Routinely acting as liaison between RSW and Campus relating to recycling, composting and waste disposal procedures.
· Operating vehicles to collect cardboard and single stream from various bins on campus.
· Providing customer service
· Processing computer components and electronic devices for salvage or recycling
· Using computers for record and information management, spreadsheet and database entry, reporting and daily timecard processing and other electronic records
· Operating weigh scales and tracking information
· Covering, loading and transporting drop boxes using a hook-lift shuttle bed system
· Operating sorting belts, conveyors, box tippers, a barrel dumper, forklifts and pallet jacks
· Sorting, storing, packaging and preparing for shipment a variety of hazardous, semi-hazardous and recyclable materials
· Collecting solid waste, electronic waste, bulky items and recyclable materials
· Sorting, packaging and shipping materials that are prohibited from disposal in the standard waste stream
· Coordinating solid waste collection efforts with other private service providers on campus
· Driving a daily tow unit route for waste disposal
· Tracking and monitoring solid waste collection
· Developing, approving, and/or implementing safety procedures and programs
· Covering routes for absent team members
· Providing recycling and solid waste services to campus events during night and weekend hours
· Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications


Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Working in a team environment
  • Learning and following set procedures and routines
  • Setting priorities and organizing daily responsibilities
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Be at least 18 years of age

Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education or training certificates related to the solid waste, composting and recycling industries, with emphasis on current regulations, rules and practices
  • Experience safely handling and shipping hazardous materials
  • Certification involving hazardous materials safety training
  • Forklift operator certification
  • Expressed interest in learning and acquiring skills related to recycling, composting and solid waste.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Ability to:
  • Lift, carry and/or otherwise move up items weighing up to 50 pounds in a routine, repetitive manner
  • Bend, stoop, crawl, twist, dig, climb and walk throughout the workday
  • Push, pull or otherwise move loaded wheeled carts, containers or tow units by hand over hard surfaces
  • Work in inclement weather conditions
  • Work routinely on uneven and slick surfaces
