SUMMER PRE-COLLEGE ASSISTANT RESIDENT DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

The Skidmore Summer Pre-College Program offers academically advanced high school students from the US the opportunity to enroll in undergraduate courses for credit, primarily as residential students. The Pre-College Assistant Resident Director (Assistant RD) works in collaboration with the Pre-College Resident Director (RD) and Pre-College Resident/Academic Assistant (RAA) undergraduate staff to mentor and support high school students in adjusting to college life academically and socially. The Pre-College Assistant RD is responsible for supporting the RDâ™s supervision of all aspects of the residential experience for Skidmore's five-week Pre-College Program carrying out the Pre-College mission and ensuring the success and safety of enrolled students. As program participants are predominantly minors, this position assumes a very high level of responsibility and oversight for the conduct, safety, and wellbeing of the high school students in residence. The position requires living on campus in the residence hall with students to create and foster a positive living-learning community for program participants. The Assistant RD provides mentorship and support on behalf of students for the academic, co-curricular, and experiential aspects of the program. The Assistant RD maintains close and regular contact with students and staff, assists in planning and leading co-curricular activities, provides crisis management support for student medical/safety emergencies, mediates low-level conflicts, ensures the enforcement of program policies and procedures, and supports the RD as needed. The Assistant RD works closely with the RD, Pre-College Program Director, and other College departments (Campus Safety, Facilities, etc.) to foster a residential environment of academic success, personal growth, and wellbeing. This is a rigorous and rewarding position that requires working nights, weekends, and daytime on-call coverage.

Responsibilities include:

  • Living in the residence hall throughout the program duration (June 23-Aug. 3)

  • Co-facilitating the residential staff training program (June 24-27).

  • Overseeing nightly curfew check-in and supporting overall residence hall operations.

  • Developing positive, appropriate interpersonal relationships with and among students and staff.

  • Being a visible, accessible presence to all students and staff and providing support as needed.

  • Cultivating a respectful community that fosters academic success and responsible conduct.

  • Ensuring the enforcement of all College and program policies, standards, and Protection of Minors protocols by students and staff.

  • Co-coordinating student Arrival Day (June 30) and Departure Day (Aug. 2).

  • Assuming the RD responsibilities one day/week, taking the lead in the residence hall supervision.

  • Supporting the RD in managing staff duties, weekly meetings, and leadership/development.

  • Serving as an RAA if/as needed.

  • Being accessible on-call daily for emergencies and urgent program and student needs.

  • Liaising with on-site Health Director, managing student health forms, and monitoring issues.

  • Informing the Resident Director of important student/staff conduct, personal, or medical issues.

  • Recognizing and responding promptly to crises, emergencies, and conduct matters; accompanying students to off-site Urgent Care/ER via Campus Safety escort.

  • Implementing co-curricular activity logistics, with required attendance at all trips and events.

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The Pre-College Assistant Resident Director reports to the Pre-College Resident Director and the Pre-College Program Director. This is a temporary, full-time residential position from June 23-August 3 that requires living with students and working nights, weekends and daytime on-call.
