Job Description
The Planning & Engineering department in Facilities Management is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our team! You will be part of a team of project managers, architects, and engineers working on construction and facilities improvement projects for the Norman campus. The Planning & Engineering department offers a variety of Mechanical Engineering services to the University, including designing Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, designing plumbing systems, providing sustainability/energy efficiency studies, and building systems troubleshooting. In this role you would work under an experienced Mechanical Engineer, assisting in the design of these projects – you could be working on a new research lab or the next new athletics facility!
In this role you could expect to:
- Learn key engineering principles, specifically those related to construction, HVAC systems, piping systems, sustainability/energy efficiency, building science, and systems design
- Utilize industry-leading software to perform energy analysis and 3D building modeling
- Work with construction industry experts, both within the University and with nationally recognized Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) firms
- Gain construction industry experience through involvement in all aspects of a project – design, estimating, bidding, and construction
- Become familiar with other design discipline principles by working with Architects, Electrical Engineers, Structural Engineers, Civil Engineers, and Interior Designers
- Work with all groups at the University – Student Life, Utilities, Research, Housing, Athletics, Real Estate, etc. – and make connections with experts across all fields
- Learn how Facilities Management constructs, renovates, and maintains hundreds of campus buildings and the associated infrastructure
- Become familiar with campus utility distribution systems – steam, chilled water, and power
- Gain experience working under a Mechanical Engineer, which can be used when applying for a Professional Engineer license
Daily tasks would include assisting a Mechanical Engineer with the following:
- Creating construction plans in 3D modeling software
- Performing building surveys to document the existing systems
- Performing HVAC, energy, and plumbing calculations
- Researching, selecting, and designing HVAC and plumbing systems
- Performing energy and financial assessments of HVAC and plumbing systems

Job Requirements

Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in a combination of two terms as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.
- Must attach Spring, Summer, and/or Fall 2025 class schedule
Skills:
Currently completing degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Construction Science, or related.
