Job Summary
The Student Success Hub provides a collaborative structure for advisors to support students across multiple programs, a commitment to ongoing professional development, and a supportive leadership team dedicated to professional advising and student success.
The Student Success Hub is searching for one Lead Environmental and Sustainability Studies (ENVST) advisor which may be hired from the Academic Advisor II or Senior Academic Advisor pool. This candidate will advise a large population of students matriculated in the ENVST degree program in the School of Environment, Society, and Sustainability (ESS) regarding their academic planning and progress. As lead advisor for ENVST, a STEM-interdisciplinary degree, this advisor will work with academic staff and faculty in the School of Environment, Society, and Sustainability on curriculum, exceptions, and promoting student success. The ENVST major is designed as an interdisciplinary STEM degree.
Once trained, this person will also be responsible for training other advisors in the cluster on ENVST curriculum. In addition to advising students in the ENVST major, the advisor selected for this position will be cross-trained to advise a select number of other majors in the Student Success Hub.
This position will assist the University in promoting a climate of respect that cultivates and sustains transformative practices by forging spaces of possibility where people feel valued and welcomed, respecting all students in their quests for individual success through degree programs, certificates, majors, etc.
 
This position carries in-person expectations with flexibility for some remote work and a schedule to be determined upon hiring.  
Responsibilities
This job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. Additional responsibilities may include occasional weekend recruiting events and collaborating with the Sustainability Action & Leading Together (SALT) living learning community. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications required of employees assigned to the job. Essential functions include:
1.  Assesses the past performance of academic programs through program evaluations.
2.  Meets with undergraduate students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, and course planning and registration.
3.  Facilitates students’ academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, tutoring, career decisions, mental health, or other various needs.
4.  Disseminates information to students, faculty, and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.
5.  Uses enterprise-level data analytics and student record technology platforms (e.g., EAB Navigate) to monitor student progress. Participates in proactive advising and intervention strategies for assigned student populations.
6.  Actively engages in campus-based professional development communities, including but not limited to UAAC or other relevant organizations, that advance direct skills in academic advising.
7.  Proficient in degree tracking software, record keeping systems, and advising-related technologies
8.  Maintains students’ academic files that include a record of advising activity, referrals, exceptions made, transfer courses, etc. Actively engages with EAB Navigate.
9.  Coordinates and/or participates in the advising-related portion of new/transfer student and parent orientation sessions.
10.  Assists with data compilation, statistical reports, and correspondence, depending on the area of assignment.
11.  Attends monthly staff meetings and trainings related to advising.
12.  Develops and presents education programs designed to supplement or enhance academic preparedness.
13.  Participates in local and national professional associations by serving on planning committees and presenting at conferences and seminars.
14.  Significantly contributes to selection and training of new advising staff.
15.  May mentor academic advisors and participate in hiring, training, and evaluating those employees.
16.  Supports the Student Success Hub in appropriate outreach events and activities as assigned.
17.  The position is distinguished from lower-level advising positions in that incumbents have responsibilities for program oversight, faculty interaction, and dealing with more complex advising-related issues.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • 4 years of direct academic advising experience.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills
