The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Emory University, School of Medicine, is looking for a highly motivated individual to work as a Research Specialist working in the laboratory of Dr. M. Ammar Zafar, focusing on bacterial pathogenesis. The research in the laboratory is looking to understand how pathogenic bacteria colonize the host mucosal surfaces, cause disease or transmit to another host. The laboratory looks at the host and bacterial factors contributing to a pathogen's dissemination. The work will include genetic manipulation of pathogenic bacteria, high throughput sequencing approaches, working with DNA, RNA, and proteins, animal studies using mice, and cell culture work. The research specialist will be trained by and work under the direct supervision of the principal investigator and will progress to work independently and eventually train new incoming lab members. The position requires a Bachelor's degree in life sciences and significant college coursework in life sciences (including laboratory components). Previous bench-related expertise in molecular techniques, bacterial genetics and animal models is highly desirable.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
- Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
- May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
- Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.
- Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
- Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
- Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
