About the Department
Job Summary
Coordinates collection, analysis, processing and reporting of data and assists Principal Investigator (PI) in judging the validity of test data obtained in regard to social-behavioral research studies of limited complexity involving co-investigators, multiple campuses &/or universities. Performs administrative tasks to ensure project study flow and communication, supervises daily research activities involving lab members and research sites/participants; assists with data collection preparation, IRB protocols, financial records, and data cleaning/analyses; onboarding and training research assistants; grant writing and manuscript review; social media and digital
communication. Completes all activities by strictly following all relevant current local, state, and federal laws, regulations, guidance, policy & procedure developed by the NU Institutional Review Board (IRB).
The Research Study Coordinator will report to Dr. Leoandra Onnie Rogers in the Development of Identities in Cultural Environments (DICE) research group in the Department of Comparative Human Development at The University of Chicago. The Research Coordinator will work with and support graduate and undergraduate students on new and existing projects examining the development of identities (race, gender, sexuality, social class) among children and adolescents in diverse cultural and educational contexts and develop skills in qualitative, mixed-method, anti-racist research in human development.
Responsibilities
- Participates in the planning and conduct of research study including participant recruitment and retention.
- Obtains informed consent.
- Administers tests and/or questionnaires following protocols.
- Collects, compiles, tabulates and processes responses.
- Gathers information.
- Extracts and analyzes data from medical charts.
- Completes basic clinical procedures such as drawing blood and obtaining blood pressure.
- Monitors and maintains systems for effective participant and data flow for studies.
- Designs and constructs experimental stimuli.
- Manages study databases which may include ensuring that data is collected and entered correctly.
- Reviews and analyzes data.
- Creates computer models, graphs, reports and summaries for use in publications, professional journals, and grant applications.
- Writes portions of grant applications.
- Co-authors scientific papers for presentation and publication.
- Researches and obtains funding.
- Creates and maintains study manuals regarding operating, safety, and etc. procedures.
- Ensures that all study documents associated with current local, state, and federal regulatory guidelines, requirements, laws and research protocols are completed in a timely manner.
- Manages website and lab communication and online presence.
- May process payments for research participants per study protocol.
- Creates lab financial plan and budget/audit expenses.
- Obtains sales quotes for lab equipment and supplies.
- Reviews and adjusts expenses to decrease costs.
- Oversees repair and maintenance of all lab equipment and ensures that lab supplies are ready and available when necessary.
- Maintains and reconciles expenditures and balances in regard to research accounts and budgets.
- Trains, directs, assigns duties to & may supervise research staff, students, residents and/or fellows.
- Acts as a mentor in regard to education of junior coordinators.
- Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.
- Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
- Performs other related work as needed.

Education:
- Must complete The University of Chicago’s IRB CITI training before interacting with any participants & must re-certify every 3 years.
Experience:
- Experience with project development, organization, and execution.
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
- Hands-on experience with basics of data analysis and programs (Qualtrics, SPSS, NVivo qualitative analysis software).
Preferred Competencies
- Knowledge of psychology, theories of human development, and developmental research.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to lead and work with a team.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, project management skills.
- Knowledge of relevant data collection and analysis software, including NVivo, SPSS, and Qualtrics..
- Skilled with technology software to utilize Excel, Canva, website design andmaintenance.
- Basic understanding of budgeting and financial management.
- Previous research experience and knowledge of basic research procedures (e.g., literature review, IRB protocol, survey development, interviewing).
- Coursework in psychology, child development, sociology, or educational research.
- Participant recruitment and community partnership development.
- Social media and website management.
- Supervision and team management and morale.
Working Conditions
- Supervisor provides objectives, deadlines and specific instructions only for new, difficult, and/or unusual work. Work is reviewed upon completion and only occasionally to verify technical accuracy and compliance with practice, policy, and procedures.
- Research Study Coordinator informs supervisor of on-going progress and/or potentially controversial matters.
