The University of Michigan Department of Biological Chemistry is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Research Assistant Professor to join our faculty. The successful candidate will engage in independent research bridging natural product discovery with synthetic and systems genome engineering of model and non-model organisms. As an integral part of our collaborative research community, you will explore the regulatory mechanisms driving intraspecies communication through the expression of specialized biosynthetic gene clusters.

- Lead and manage an independent research program focusing on genome engineering, systems and synthetic biology, microbial physiology, and natural product production.

- Bridge cutting-edge natural product discovery with synthetic and systems genome engineering.

- Investigate regulatory mechanisms of intraspecies communication by expressing specialized biosynthetic gene clusters.

- Design and execute experiments using model and non-model organisms in support of research objectives.

- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across the university to advance the research agenda.

- Publish high-impact research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present at national and international conferences.

- Secure external funding through grant applications to support research activities.

- Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and other junior lab members in research methodologies and techniques.

- Contribute to the academic community by participating in seminars, workshops, and other professional development activities.

Ph.D. and/or M.D. in Biological Sciences and a strong record of research accomplishments in methods to accelerate strain engineering, particularly the metabolic engineering of pentose metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae . A diverse background training in genome engineering, systems and synthetic biology, microbial physiology, and natural product production. Documentation of scholarly ability and achievement (record of publications in peer-reviewed journals; acquisition of external funding, etc.) is required. The preferred candidate will also possess the critical elements of teaching (knowledge of subject matter, skill in presentation, enthusiastic approach, etc.).

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
