The hourly research assistant (~40 hrs/week) will be responsible for literature review, planning and execution of preliminary laboratory experiments (with the support of the PI and an REU student), and analysis of preliminary data as needed to support an NSF-funded project studying the physical mechanisms driving transmission of seagrass wasting disease. The hourly research assistant will have experience working on engineering problems with marine/ocean applications and will work in the Chase Ocean Engineering Laboratory at UNH.
Duties/Responsibilities
Literature review and background research on plant-flow interactions and seagrass wasting disease (~25% time)
With the support of the PI, co-supervise a summer REU student in a 10-week long research experience involving preliminary experiments on plant-plant contact mechanisms:
Includes working together with the REU student to design and carry out preliminary experiments (~50% time)
Analysis of collected data from preliminary experiments, joint with the REU student (~25% time)
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience
Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Experience with programming and analysis in Matlab or similar programming language
Experience with hands-on experimental or engineering design work
Experience contributing to a diverse working environment
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Ability to work individually as well as part of a broader team
Ability to create plans and deadlines, and meet benchmarks with the support of the primary supervisor
Strong writing and oral communication skills required
Preferred Qualifications:
Interest in interdisciplinary research
