Scope of Job
Assists licensed physical and occupational therapists, physical, occupational therapy assistants, and medical students in all aspects of therapy services to maximize each patient’s functional ability when recovering from injuries, surgeries, or illnesses.
Description of Duties
  • Provides physical assistance with therapeutic interventions, maintaining equipment and supplies within the department and completing other administrative tasks to improve patient flow management in the outpatient rehabilitation clinic.
  • Transfers and transports patients in treatment area in a safe and timely manner.
  • While under direct supervision of the treating therapist, the rehabilitation aide will assist with direct patient care relative to patient’s age, culture, and condition.
  • Sets up and adjusts/organizes therapeutic equipment, monitors exercise performance, helps with providing home exercises.
  • Monitors patient progress during sessions and report any concerns to the therapist.
  • Provides encouragement and support to patients throughout the rehabilitation process.
  • Records treatment/service revisions in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Maintains accurate patient records and assist with documenting progress or session notes as directed by therapists.
  • Communicates verbally and in written form with the therapists, assistants, students, patients, volunteers, and other aides to maintain efficient workflow within the clinical environment.
  • Provides general information and education to patients regarding therapy exercises or routines when appropriate.
  • Follow all safety protocols to ensure a safe and clean treatment environment.
  • Ensures all equipment is cleaned, sanitized, and maintained according to facility protocols.
  • Organizes linen, disinfects equipment, sterilizes equipment, and tracks reusable supplies for order and re-order.
  • Receives, distributes, and restocks supplies.
  • Assists with filing, answering phones, scheduling appointments and performs general office support.
  • Assists in organizing patient files, handling paperwork, and inputting data into electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Assists with collection of Patient Reported Outcome Assessment data.
  • Ensures that patient confidentiality is maintained according to HIPAA regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.
Required Education
High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Education
Post-secondary education or certification in a related field (e.g., physical therapy, occupational therapy).
Licenses/Certifications
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR).
Required Experience
Two (2) years of experience as a rehabilitation aide in outpatient orthopedic or oncology rehabilitation experience or a healthcare setting.
Preferred Experience
None.
Equipment
Use of standard office/therapeutic equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Work is performed primarily in a healthcare setting environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other
Strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills. Basic understanding of healthcare terminology and therapy processes. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to work well with patients and healthcare teams.
