Job Summary
 

This position is responsible for supervising a team consisting of Lead Custodians, Senior Custodians, and Custodians. Direct, administer, and coordinate custodial operations to maintain all assigned buildings in a sanitary, attractive and orderly condition. Act as the first point of contact for campus staff on custodial matters. Responsible for ensuring that assigned work and scheduled functions are carried out in a timely, quality-conscious manner. Responsible for a variety of personnel functions including training, safety, corrective action and performance evaluations. Assist in developing supply budget, ordering, and distributing inventory. Responsible for managing equipment inventory and budget, identifying new equipment opportunities, equipment maintenance, and replacement. Perform security and building inspections for assigned supervisory complex. Supervise production, quality control and conduct time/motion studies.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training 
  • Five years’ experience in leadership and supervision of a custodial services or related department. 
  • Supervisory experience and skills to recruit, train, assign work, set expectations, evaluate performance, and provide recognition or corrective action, up to and including release as required. 
  • Experience in motivating employees, fostering teamwork and maintaining high morale in the workplace while remaining sensitive to others.
  • Experience with and knowledge of custodial equipment, cleaning techniques, preventive maintenance and staffing workloads. Sufficient knowledge of building/interior finish and materials allowing for an understanding of cleaning and maintenance requirements. 
  • Experience using a wide variety of computer programs, including word-processing, spreadsheets and database management, project management, e-mail and calendaring. 
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with and provide customer service to a diverse population; communication skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Skill to write succinctly; provide clear and understandable reports and instructions and develop processes for task assignment and completion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Organizational skills to ensure adequate staffing and project scheduling to achieve timely progress on multiple, simultaneous projects, meet deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity. 
  • Skills to prioritize tasks. Knowledge and skill to utilize multiple computer software programs and applications. 
  • Develop processes for task assignment and completion. 
  • Skills to motivate employees. Knowledge of inventory control practices. 
  • Knowledge to establish safety procedures in the use and handling of hazardous materials and toxic waste. 
  • Skills to interpret technical, safety and MSDS documentation as it relates to the use of chemicals, equipment and tools. 
  • Skills to develop, implement, and conduct technical training and safety programs. 
  • Knowledge of approved safety devices and practices. 
  • Skills to review and interpret technical data related to trade, personnel forms, contract items, policies, etc.

Department Overview

The Custodial Services department services over 14 million square feet of space on the UC Davis University campus, and outlying locations. The department prepares laboratories, classrooms, and indoor common spaces for the rigors of research and teaching at the highest level. The department's goal is to provide quality, consistent services that are responsive to customers' diverse needs. 
This position oversees custodial services in Aggie Square, including the Anova housing site. Situated on 11 acres in Sacramento near the UC Davis Medical Center, Aggie Square is an innovation district featuring more than 1.2 million square feet of public and private space for research and academic pursuits; support for startups launching new businesses; continuing education and job training; and community uses.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space. 
This position is subject to medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License. Participate in the DMV Pull Notice System. Work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present, including cleaning in close proximity to lab waste, animal and plant waste matter, radioactive waste, blood spillage, chemical smells, clean fecal matter from floors in rooms and public areas and to clean in close proximity to human cadavers or animal corpses. This is an exempt position. The work week for full-time exempt employees is normally considered to be 40 hours; however, greater emphasis is placed on meeting the responsibilities assigned to the position than on working a specified number of hours. Exempt employees do not receive overtime compensation or compensatory time off or additional compensation beyond the established salary for the position. Work a non-standard work schedule that may include nights, weekends, or alternative schedules such as 80 hours in 8 or 9 shifts instead of 10. This position supports critical campus functions operating 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. To assure adequate support of these functions the employee may be required to participate in a rapid response program to facilitate timely return of staff to the campus as required to meet critical needs. This rapid response program may include requirements for the employee to inform the University how they can be reached during non-working hours, to carry University provided radios, cell phones, pagers or other telecommunications equipment which would facilitate communication between the campus and employee during non-work hours, or to accept rotating on-call responsibility which could periodically restrict the off-campus movements of the employee. Vacation usage by the employee is restricted during peak workload periods as required to meet the needs of the campus.
