Position Description
Duke’s Nicholas School of Environment in Durham, North Carolina, is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate with experience in quantitative modeling of the land-atmosphere system and/or use of satellite data to constrain agricultural sector nitrogen emissions. The position will be supervised by Dr. Drew Shindell (https://nicholas.duke.edu/people/faculty/shindell ). The Postdoc will advance efforts to evaluate a broad spectrum of effects from interventions in the agricultural sector on climate change, air quality, and the economic consequences of those. Initial work will include use of recent satellite data to constrain current emissions of reactive nitrogen species. This will be followed by modeling of responses of biogeochemical cycles affecting carbon, nitrogen and methane fluxes to climate change, variations in concentrations of atmospheric pollutants, and shifts in direct application of nitrogen to ecosystems.

The candidate must have a PhD degree in a related field, be fluent in computer programming, preferably python, and will ideally have experience in working with a relevant land-system model such as the Community Land Model, an atmospheric composition model such as GEOS-Chem, and/or satellite retrievals of species such as ammonia or nitrogen oxides. The candidate should be capable of working both independently and collaboratively and have a good command of English.

Time Frame: Initial appointment will be for 1 year, with possibility to extend to 2 or 3 years. Position is available starting May 1st, with priority consideration for applications submitted by April 1st.
