Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Beaver’s Digest Editor-in-Chief position for the Orange Media Network (OMN) at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Beaver’s Digest Editor-in-Chief is responsible for student-produced content for the website, any printed publications and all social media platforms.
Position Duties
Beaver’s Digest Editor-in-Chief Responsibilities
  • Create, assign, edit and update content for website and for digital and/or print publications that tackles a range of topics relevant to lifestyle coverage: student health and wellness, food, campus events, student groups, entertainment and issues with social relevancy
  • Ensure website content is published weekly during the academic year
  • Design and publish at least one magazine per term, working with Creative on page design to participate in all print production work
  • Ensure that all articles have been copyedited for accuracy
  • Work with Marketing, Creative and OSUPC to lead at least one publication promotional event per term, through launch parties or other public outreach
  • Hold weekly cohort meetings with staff and adviser to train, review the week’s strengths and areas for improvement, plan and execute activities for the upcoming week, month and term
  • Build and maintain relationships with partners and stakeholders
  • Grow audience engagement
  • Fully participate in weekly OMN Student Leadership meetings
  • Work to ensure that OMN program content is current, relevant, and consistent with OMN’s mission, vision and policies
  • Manage payroll
  • Other duties as assigned by the adviser

Communication
  • Meet regularly with OMN adviser to go over feedback and areas for improvement
  • Respond to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
  • Report monthly to the OMN Advisory Board, providing updates, analysis and insightful information on engagement, listeners, staffing, strategies and accolades

Leadership
  • Work 20 regular office hours each week for Orange Media Network, at least half of these hours should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday). Hours may vary during different stages of the term
  • Follow all OMN policies and procedures and hold staff and volunteers to them as well
  • Act professionally
  • Ensure designs and content are centered on equitable representation and inclusion, with attention to impact on historically underrepresented and marginalized communities and constituencies

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Served as a member of paid OMN staff for at least 6 months – or – as a volunteer OMN staff for at least 12 months
  • Knowledgeable in newsgathering, news values and fact checking strategies
  • Knowledgeable of AP Style
  • Knowledgeable of the SPJ Code of Ethics
  • Is a strong writer, communicator
  • Is organized and reliable
  • Is experienced with coaching and with giving and receiving feedback
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
  • Is knowledgeable and experienced in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and partners

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Had been a paid member of staff for at least 12 months
  • Had prior attendance and participation in OMN Fall training
  • Capable of effectively using SNOsites, video, Google tools and social media analytics for building audience engagement and creating content for online platforms
  • Comfortable with public speaking
