Position Summary

Program Information
The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP), funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, seeks to support undergraduate students who are economically disadvantaged and/or those who identify with groups that have been historically underrepresented in healthcare professions. Program participants are selected because of promising achievement in college as well as a commitment to pursue careers within the health professions. SHPEP is national academic enrichment program offered at twelve medical center sites across the country. At Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the program offers career exposure in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Physical Therapy to eligible students for free. Throughout the duration of the six-week program, students are afforded intensive and personalized health professions school preparation. The support provided for participating students help them to become more competitive applicants to health professions schools. Each year, SHPEP serves 80 scholars who will be rising college sophomores and juniors at the time of program participation. A major component of the programs is centered on academic enrichment with a focus on improving of scholars? performance in pre-health science courses. Supplemental courses are also offered to help scholars strengthen their learning and study skills. Alongside their coursework, scholars participate in practical experiences and career exposure seminars. The 2025 program will be held from June 6th - July 18th.

Job Outline
The SHPEP Program Assistant will assist with managing pre-health science courses and general program execution for all program scholars. Participating scholars are undergraduate students (rising sophomores and juniors at the time of the program) from diverse backgrounds who generally have varying skillsets and require guidance for education advancement and career exploration. This is a great opportunity to assist with exercising curriculum construction and establishing differentiation skills. The Program Assistant will be paid at a rate of $25 an hour.

Responsibilities

The SHPEP Program Assistant will be responsible for assisting with preparing for the summer program.

Specific responsibilities will require that the Assistant:

• Supports the preparation of program sessions including classes, special events and other program related activities
  • Specific Activities Include, but not limited to: Creating volunteer opportunities for SHPEP students with local Washington Heights community-based organizations, creating leadership development SHPEP/NERA programming, integration of digital learning platforms for remote learning, helping to expand SHPEP/NERA focus on interprofessional collaboration, creating a SHPEP/NERA mentoring network
• Completes general clerical duties as assigned by Program Manager and Director
• Understands the overall goals and objectives of the program

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma

Preferred Qualifications

• Full-time CUIMC students with education and training in science and/or mathematics
• Demonstration of leadership and organization skills is required
• Previous teaching experience is extremely helpful, but not necessary
