Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Manager, Civic Education – Levin Center at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):
The Carl Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy seeks an innovative and growth-oriented Civic Education Manager (CEM) with the passion to grow the Levin Center’s civic education program, Learning by Hearings (LbH). The CEM will be charged with leading the Levin Center’s civic education program providing team guidance and leadership while developing civic education curriculum and extracurricular materials in collaboration with other team members. The CEM will be responsible for the program’s growth both in its curriculum offerings as well as its geographical reach across Michigan securing adoption and use of those materials by schools and educational programs.
Reporting to the Levin Center Director, Jim Townsend, and working closely with the Manager for Operations and Finance, the CEM will lead a small team of staff providing team supervision, strategic program guidance, and reporting on program status, outcomes, and achievements.
Research, write, edit, and guide lesson plans and classroom resources for high school teachers growing the Center’s library of civic education materials – The CEM will develop lesson plans and classroom resources in line with MI state standards and will take high school curricula requirements into account to maximize their benefit to high school teachers. The CEM will furthermore guide and support the team’s Civic Education Specialist(s) in the development of their lesson plans and classroom resources.
Lead the strategic growth of the LbH program – Receiving guidance and input from the Levin Center director, the CEM will lead the strategic growth of the LbH program both in its program offerings, resource library, and in its geographical reach across Michigan. Supervising the LbH team, the CEM will be responsible for establishing the Levin Center as a trusted, credible, and reputable resource for educators.
Teacher professional development, program presentations, and partnership building – The CEM will lead teacher professional development sessions and will present the program at relevant conferences. The CEM will be tasked with maintaining existing and establishing new relationships and partnerships with relevant civic education organizations. Outreach tasks, partnership management, event organization, and project coordination will be implemented by the Civic Education Outreach Coordinator. The CEM will guide and inform the Outreach Coordinator’s work to identify growth opportunities and priorities.
Research, guide, and edit content for the Levin Center’s Learning by Hearings after-school program – Alongside a library of classroom resources, the LbH program offers high school students an opportunity to experience outside of school what it is like to conduct fact-based, bipartisan oversight hearings via partnerships with the YMCA’s Youth & Government programs and other student enrichment programs.
The CEM will research, guide, and review annual oversight scenarios, including supporting documentation, for running a successful program. The CEM will reach out to new programs and form new partnerships for wider adoption of the LbH extracurricular offering.

Qualifications:
Education Bachelor's degree
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, history, political science, public policy, journalism, communications, or a related discipline. Master's or PhD preferred in in education, history, political science, public policy, journalism, communications, or related discipline.
Experience Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)
5 years of experience teaching history, social studies, or related courses at the secondary school level.
Experience developing and writing social studies, government, or history curriculum for high school students.
Experience writing and editing lesson plans and other materials for use by teachers, after school enrichment programs, and the public.
Previous curriculum research roles in the non-profit or education sector experience preferred.
Experience conducting public policy and historical research.
Experience running civic education programs.
