Position Description
The HURI Research Fellowship in Ukrainian Studies supports significant, innovative research on topics pertaining to Ukraine. This fellowship is designed to bring scholars to Harvard University for one academic term of focused, independent research. Fellows enjoy access to Harvard’s vast research resources and vibrant intellectual environment.
  • 4-months, full-time, in-residence at Harvard for one academic term (fall or spring), beginning on either September 1st or February 1st
  • Stipend of 5,900 USD per month
  • Roundtrip plane/rail travel to Boston
  • Full access to Harvard’s vast libraries and archives
  • Access to shared office space
Basic Qualifications
  • Fellowships from the Ukrainian Research Institute support significant, innovative, independent research on topics pertaining to Ukrainian history, culture, and society while in residence at Harvard University.
  • Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent (Candidate of Sciences, кандидат наук) in the humanities and social sciences.
  • This fellowship is open-rank, supporting scholars at any stage of their career. Applicants must have received their PhD degree prior to the application deadline.

  • Scholars who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing knowledge of Ukraine through teaching, research, and publication are encouraged to apply.
  • Citizens of all countries are welcome.
  • Non-US applicants must be eligible to receive and maintain a short-term J-1 visa to carry out research in residence at Harvard supported by a fellowship from HURI. Please also note the two-year national residency requirements, which may apply to you if you recently held a long-term J-1 visa.

    • Research Proposal, 3-5 pages, double spaced
    • Title and Abstract of your PhD Dissertation (only if submitted in the previous 7 years)
    • Table of Contents of your PhD Dissertation (only if submitted in the previous 7 years)
    • Writing Sample
  • Applications must be submitted no later than 23 January 2025.
  • Letters of reference are due on Thursday, 30 January 2025. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all letters of recommendation are received no later than 2/15/2024. Your application is not complete without the required reference letters.
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
