Position Summary:
The Department of Geography and the Environment Laboratory Assistant is responsible for supporting laboratory course instruction, assisting with student and faculty research, managing the Department’s laboratories, and providing administrative and logistical support to the Department.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assisting with the preparation, set-up, execution, and break-down of environmental laboratory and field exercises, including occasional attendance during off-campus field trips; supporting student learning during the laboratory exercises; Principal obligations are to the GEV 1050, GEV 1051 GEV 2310, and various MSE courses within the Department’s curriculum, along with support for other courses as required.

  • Assisting with the recruitment of graduate students; coordinating on-campus visits for prospective students; occasional travel to off-campus recruiting events

  • Maintaining field and laboratory equipment in the teaching laboratories and select equipment in the Department’s research laboratories; developing operations, quality control, and troubleshooting procedures; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment maintenance, replacement, service, and repair; training and assisting faculty and students with scientific analyses; coordinating the use of shared instrumentation; ensuring safety compliance in the Department’s laboratories; Serving on College Lab Safety Committee;

  • Assisting with student and faculty field and laboratory research;

  • Ordering, maintaining, and tracking teaching lab supplies and equipment; maintaining the teaching lab budget; maintaining chemical inventories in teaching and research labs; Support department outreach projects.

  • Providing administrative support to the Department by reserving vans, organizing drivers, scheduling thesis defenses and thesis proposal defenses, ordering supplies for research labs, and similar tasks; maintain the Department’s internal SharePoint sites; serve on the Department’s Social Media Committee and assist with Department communications; supporting department functions (open houses, majors fairs, and social events) by assisting with setup, execution, and breakdown; events are occasionally held outside of normal work hours (evenings and weekends);

  • Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental studies, biology, chemistry, earth science or related field.

  • Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Must demonstrate communication skills relevant to interacting with undergraduate students while assisting with instruction during laboratory exercises and ability to provide developmental feedback on student work.
  • Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office software and ability to learn additional software. Must also have basic knowledge of laboratory work in an environmental teaching lab setting, with ability and willingness to learn additional techniques and instrumentation.
  • Must be familiar with computer work stations. Must be familiar with and able to work with basic scientific laboratory equipment.
  • -Valid Driver’s License required with a good driving record and no traffic violations. Must be able to meet and maintain VU driving privileges as outlined by Villanova’s Risk Management’s Motor Vehicle Record Policy for Driver’s of University Vehicles.
  • 1 year of related work experience is preferred.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
  • Computer work stations, laboratory equipment (e.g., scales, meters, analytical instruments). Operation of University vehicles;
  • Use of chemicals in teaching and research; occasional outdoors work during class field trips;
  • Ability to conduct occasional outdoors field work.
