Job Summary
The Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE) program at Eastern Washington University (EWU) invites nominations and applications for the full-time RIDE Spokane Dental Director. The successful candidate will also be eligible for appointment as an Affiliate Faculty member at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. This full-time EWU position is located in the university district of Spokane, Washington. The expanded RIDE facility is currently under construction, set to open Summer 2025 in the UW / Gonzaga Health Sciences Building at 840 E. Spokane Falls Blvd.
The RIDE program is a collaboration between Eastern Washington University and the University of Washington School of Dentistry (UWSOD). RIDE’s mission is to provide access to a high quality, public-funded dental education track that develops dentists who are committed to serving the needs of rural and underserved communities in Washington. Students graduating from the RIDE program track will receive a DDS from the UWSOD, but spend their first and second year in Spokane as students of EWU.
The full-time RIDE Spokane Dental Director is responsible for managing the first and second year RIDE program, reporting directly to the EWU Dean of Health, Science and Public Health and the UWSOD Associate Dean for Regional Affairs. The Spokane RIDE Director is the chief administrative officer of the unit and is responsible for accomplishing strategic plan goals, representing the unit at College and University levels; enforcing compliance requirements and university policies and procedures; contributing to the units teaching mission; managing budgets and personnel; including faculty retention and promotion; and in conjunction with faculty, determining work assignments and course scheduling. In addition, the Director is expected to provide effective leadership to the unit, focusing on achieving excellence in instruction, scholarship, equity and due process in department decision making.
We seek a dental professional with senior leadership experience, the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment, who is dedicated to the mission of the RIDE program. Candidates should have a DDS or DMD degree, teaching and administrative experience, and an established record of developing and sustaining relationships with students, faculty, staff and the professional community. The candidate should have, an ability to work sensitively in multi-institutional setting, and a willingness to adapt creatively to change.

The salary for this position is $127,146 (minimum) up to $150,000 (maximum). Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on qualifications, education, experience, and skills.     Spokane RIDE Program Management :
    Administration
    • Interpret and implement multiple and complex federal, state, EWU, UW, policies and procedures.
    • Oversee the RIDE Administrator in formulating general administrative policies.
    • Develop executive-level reports for the Program for strategic planning and operational decision-making.
    • Administer institutional, state and federal personnel policies and requirements including faculty and staff appointments, promotions, salary actions and terminations.
    • Direct, monitor and analyze the financial resources for the Program including financial planning, budgeting and accounting functions of the operations and personnel portions of the budget.
    • Ensure compliance with the fiscal/grant policies and procedures of the University, Program, State, and those of federal and other funding agencies.
    • Oversee procedures and documentation that assure fiscal compliance with University, State and Federal guidelines and laws involving personnel/payroll, purchasing, budget management and travel.
    • Perform other duties as required.

    Fiscal & Resource Management
    • Approve and audit expenditures, payroll and personnel changes for accuracy and compliance with institutional policies and procedures.
    • Develop, monitor, program budget including forecasting, projections and the allocation of funding of faculty salaries.
    • Coordinate with staff to develop and manage capital equipment/assets plan to assure equipment within Program is appropriate, as technology and market needs change.
    • Assign facility space and oversee lease agreement terms and conditions.
    • Enforce/develop policies and support Administrator in delivering robust student services, to include student admissions, financial aid, registration, orientation, student dental issue and fees, course remediation, disability services, environmental health and safety, parking, transportation, building access, health insurance and wellness resources, and student life activities

    • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with key groups within the University, UW School of Dentistry, UW School of Medicine and the dental community at large.

    Academic and Staff Supervision:
    Serve as the program’s academic and administrative chief executive officer

    • Advise faculty members and staff regarding University Policy and procedures relating to personnel and payroll issues.
    • Advise faculty and staff on RIDE program policies and procedures.
    • Direct regular personnel meetings
    • Perform other duties as required.

    Academic Supervision
    • Supervise all RIDE Program faculty, ensuring annual performance evaluations.
    • Assign teaching roles to ensure adequate faculty coverage and negotiate part-time faculty salaries.
    • Facilitate resolution of faculty and student issues, including professionalism and calibration training as needed.
    • Collaborate with the UW RIDE Program Director on annual calibration and faculty development opportunities, as well as quarterly course evaluations/review sessions.
    • Collaborate with UW RIDE faculty on CODA accreditation requirements for outcome assessment, quality assurance and student assessment.
    • Perform other duties as required.

    Staff Supervision
    • Supervision of all non-faculty program personnel, ensuring annual performance evaluations.
    • Oversee job descriptions, hiring and onboarding of program personnel.
    • Address potential personnel problems, evaluate, make recommendations, take appropriate actions with support of HR and the Dean.
    • Assign Staff responsibilities.
    • Support staff development, provide training and counsel, and as necessary, review staff assignments and make adjustments as necessary.
    • Conduct personnel performance evaluations and recommend needed improvements and/or disciplinary action.
    • Maintain personnel files including vacation/sick leave records and related supporting documents.
    • Perform other duties as required.

    Course/Curriculum Development and Delivery:
    • Oversee the expansion of the RIDE Spokane curriculum to include the 26 courses in the second year DDS curriculum by the completion of the FY26 academic year. Work directly with UW instructors and EWU faculty during the transition.
    • Select and oversee qualified instructors to undertake development of courses and instruction to ensure equivalency with the UW SOD course curriculum.
    • Evaluate and recruit dentists to teach ongoing first and second year DDS degree courses.
    • Coordinate teaching assignments and curriculum delivery modalities to be equivalent with UWSOD requirements.
    • Participate as a course director and/or lab faculty in relevant areas of dental expertise.
    • Ensure that only EWU/UWSOD approved faculty provide assessment and supervision for participating RIDE students.
    • Ensure that instruction at the level of student preparation/education is provided.
    • Perform other duties as required.
