The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire is seeking an adjunct staff member to teach courses and support research related to Coastal Survey Development, Marine Weather, and Marine Modeling. This position will focus on applying advanced modeling techniques to coastal environments and will leverage the candidate’s extensive experience with NOAA’s operational systems.
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research, particularly in advancing data processing methods for real-time observations, analyses, and model forecast guidance, especially as it relates to unmanned systems. The role is supported by grant-funded projects and includes opportunities for teaching, publishing, and mentoring.

Duties/Responsibilities

Teaching and Mentoring (50%)

  • Teach courses in Coastal Survey Development and Marine Modeling, focusing on both theoretical and applied aspects of coastal forecasting and survey methodologies.

  • Mentor and advise graduate students on their thesis and dissertation projects related to marine modeling and coastal survey systems.

  • Contribute to the ongoing development of a Joint Hydrographic Center (JHC) curriculum that aligns with advancements in hydrography to maintain a Category A certification from the International Federation of Surveyors/International Hydrographic Organization/International Cartographic Association (FIG/IHO/ICA) Advisory Board.

Research (40%)

  • Lead and develop practical projects that bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications of marine forecasting, ocean mapping, and data processing technologies.

  • Engage in research and grant funded projects, especially those related to NOAA’s Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) and Office of Coast Survey (OCS) goals and objectives.

Other (10%)

  • Participate in departmental activities, including guest lectures, seminars, and collaborations with industry partners.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience :


  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric and/or Marine Sciences, or a closely related field.

  • At least 10 years of professional experience in marine modeling and coastal survey systems, with notable contributions to NOAA projects and operational forecasting systems.

  • Demonstrated expertise in meteorology and ocean sciences, with specialized knowledge in coastal modeling, data acquisition, processing, and forecasting.

  • Strong record of academic publications and conference presentations.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :


  • Extremely adaptable, staying up-to-date with the latest marine forecasting and ocean survey technologies in a rapidly evolving industry

  • An effective collaborator within cross-functional teams (e.g., software developers, system engineers, project managers) who can clearly communicate technical concepts to students and non-technical stakeholders, if need be.

  • Strong communication and mentoring skills, with a demonstrated ability to teach complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.


Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience with oceanic data assimilation, operational forecasting, and GIS-based marine applications is highly desirable.
